I had a new set of Edelbrock TES headers installed when my new motor was put in. Now I have BAD starter heat soak trouble. I've tired different starters, wraping the starter, moving the soliniod and wraping the Y-pipe under the starter. Also have a new 800cca battery and new cables. Still when ever the motor heats up it won't crank over until it cools down. When it's cold it cranks great. Anyone else have this trouble? Anyone know what mini starter will fit? It is a 85 T/A 350 5-speed 2pc. rear main seal. A starter for a 305 with a 5-speed fits. GM #323-287. A starter for an auto won't.Thanks

Nope, no probs here for 2 yrs. Try a starter heat shield.

I've got the TES too, and no problems here. I had a 79 trans am that had this problem, it had hooker long tube headers on it. The problem wasn't the headers though. Check your ground cable connections. It's amazing what a little heat can do to a borderline ground problem. Make sure you have good metal to metal contact with the engine casting and negative cable. 9 times out of ten it's an electrical problem that was cured by removing a cable to install a remedy and reconnecting it. Check the starter connections too. Good luck.

I just tried the ground cable. That's not it. I had my fingers crossed too. Anybody have even a guess? Still looking for a mini starter. Thanks

I had TES for yrs. without any trouble. Then when I put the new engine in, it created a lot more heat and I had this problem BAD. I moved the solenoid to the spare tire well in the rear hatch along with my battery. No problems since then. Where did you mount your solenoid?

On the firewall to the left of the power brake booster. Should be cooler there I would think.

Turned out that an old splice next to the brake booster in the purple starter crank wire was dirty. I wrapped my solenoid with 3M foam tape (home depot), aluminum foil and a heat shield from auto zone. I haven't had any problems since. I still get scared when I turn off my car and have to start it again in the summer.

I used to trade my starter in at autozone every year or two to fix the problem.

My guess is it's an electrical thing but it wouldn't hurt to shield the starter like you have already.

I had that problem, but I just got a remote mount solenoid kit and mounted the new solenoid away from the headers and haven't had the first problem since...

stupid question, but when you installed the remote solonoid, did you install the jumper that goes on the back of the starter's solonoid? I'm using a parts store rebuilt on my slp headers(granted there coated) but they actually touch the starter and i've had no proplem. If you have an electric fan i suppose its possible that your still making lots of underhood heat. Do you get the starters from the same store? Try a differnt rebuilder next time.

I heard that mini starters do well with heat soak problems. Don't know it its true though.

Well I put in a Powermaster mini starter last night and so far I can't get it to NOT start!!!! Keep your fingers crossed. I ordered it from Summit on Monday and got it the next day by noon. Go summit. I think I'm all set now, Thanks to everyone that replied.

The car starts perfect now. Cranks great no matter how hot it is.
The mini starter was what I needed. Lesson learned.

I mounted it on the passenger side up near the overflow tank, right below it actually so it's pretty close to the battery. Works fine. As I remember my choices on location were kinda limited by cable length. Don't know exactly how the TAs engine bay is setup so you may not have this space free. No wrap of anykind.

My kit was a Mr Gasket kit I got at a local performance store BTW.

Hopefully the mini has you covered so you don't have to worry about it.

Mini-starter work and do elimiate the problem with heat soak with all brands of headers.
