1A Auto ABS Headliner

I justed wanted to comment on the head liner that I bought from 1A auto. I live in Canada so shipping here sometimes is a challenge. Ia agreed to ship to a mailbox I have in the US a small border town. Anyway when I got the box I open it righ away to left the headliner go back to it's natural form. It sat that way for about a month.

When I tried to take the old head liner out and it just fell apart, there was no way that this one could be recovered, followed the instruction and the new headliner fit like a glove. There is no way anyone could like that this was a replaced.

The only challenge I had is the headliner is cut for a normal dome light, I have map lights, the instruction set ask if you have mapped light to call for further instruction, their are no further instruction for mapped lights, just over head console. But I was just careful making my own cut for it, everything lined up perfectly, no gaps and not sagging

Thanks 1A, what a great product

Glad to hear everything went well for you. I know some of these can be tricky to install, happy you were able to get your in place with minimal effort.

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

572, how did it mount across the front of the window? all of the ABS liners i have seen dont have appointments for the clips that were there. if you have your old clips you can pop them in place and when you pop the headliner in place hit them with F-26 and they will be there till you want them to come off and this will support your headliner like factory.

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

I used velcro strips right in front of where the rear view mirror sits, used contact cement to attach them to the headliner and roof.

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

Looks like it fit prettty nicely for aftermarket. The reviews I have heard are ussually 50/50 on the ABS ones...some people get a good one, and some people dont. I played it safe and recovered my stock board and it came out perfect. Obviously thats not an option for some people though since some have taken a beating over the years and the stock backing board is shot. Looks great though!

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

When I fit mine, I started from the back and moved forward, the last things I put on where the sun visors, it took me about 45 mins to an hour, to do this by myself. |This was the first headliner I have ever done

the 1AIHL00224 is the covered one, where as the 1AIHL00551 is the bare abs one (so you'd need to paint or cover it yourself).

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

Anyone tried just painting the ABS Shell and rolling with it? I mean if i could get a close color (VHT has one that is pretty dang close) I think i might just roll with that, I mean not like you have to have carpet there just seems like uneeded replacement because the glue is going to get hot, the carpet is going get wet, dirty, burnt, etc. etc.

IMO, painted ABS plastic will never have the "feel" of a real covered headliner. The fabric gives it a more expensive look than just painted plastic. The headliner in my honda is just basic vinyl covering, and even THATS better than just painted plastic....and my honda is the bare bones DX model. Plus, I'm sure those ABS liners are not going to be perfectly smooth so your going to see any ripple in the plastic or imperfection with only paint.

And how exactly would the fabric get wet, dirty, or burnt??? Unless you drive through rain with the T-tops off on a regular basis or play with lighters in your car, the headliner should never even be touched. My original one being 25 years old wasn't even too bad....just sagging a little.

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

granted that yea fabric is going to look better.. I smoke daily in my car and have no intent on stopping...I've had cigs fly into the sagginess, i've had friends actually burn holes in the headliner by accident moving around( back seat is gone now).. I know its not going to look stock by any means, but throw a lil body filler in the ripples and get a nice smooth feel and then do like a satin to get away from possibility of glare... I'm just saying if I replace it I don't want to have to maintence or replace it ever again if possible..

Re: 1A Auto ABS Headliner

I smoked for about a year and a half....but i will never smoke in my trans am. I respect the car way too much to light one up in it, and smoking ruins an interior. As you said, your freinds burn holes in the car all the time. I really don't want to sound like I'm being an A-hole, but why would you bother replacing the headliner if your just going to smoke all the time and ruin it? Fabric or plastic, if a cig butt touches it, it will leave a mark.

1A's website says they are folded up in a box for shipping and must undo them immediately. does this mean its flexible enough to snake around my rollbar in the car? my factory headliner board wont take another removal and install. its way to soft to get around the main hoop anyway.(cage is real tight to car) old saying goes, "you cant push a chain."

these do come partially rolled to cut down on shipping box size (and cost), so they are somewhat flexible. we recommend letting them set out to regain their shape a bit (much like the acc carpets); dumping out the box and installing usually is gonna be a disappointing outcome. however, as the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait

Yea I understand. It's just funny because I've owned a mix of sports cars and other cars. With every sports car I've had...I just can't bring myself to smoke in them. Yet my 2005 jeep wrangler, I smoked in probably a few days after I bought it. Same thing with my honda. Guess it depends on the type of car for me, lol.

What a deal for a DIY job with all the problems. I have said this before, a local Auto reupholstery shop can do it cheaper.

i agree. i installed an ABS headliner/sail panels/visors a few months ago and thefirst ABS headliner i was sent had a permanent bow to it. i ended up getting another one at no charge relatively quickly from the company i bought the kit from, but because of the problem with the first headliner and not having any clips at the front of the headliner and on the sail panels, i wish i would have just had my original stuff redone by an auto upholstry shop. velcro works in place of the clips but i would still rather have OEM style clips. also, if i was in a situation were i couldnt salvage my original headliner i wouldve waited until i found another one from a junkyard or online.

Worth it YES!...For a 1 1/2 hr wait I got a factory look new headliner. The shop removed the old fabric, repaired the board with fiberglass, new Factory look material and reinstalled it. I could not tell the difference and I am the orignal owner. $147 total vs the DIY cost
