Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
Why would you fill in the lattice near the center when it's not solid on the original?
Any chance of at least not doing this on the 18's?

My first guess would be production cost, maybe strength a close second. Those smaller holes are a biotch to keep clean anyway, small detail.

Ive got to agree keeping the small holes clean on the lattice are hard + time consuming to fool with. I think filling em in was a good move especially if also done for strength reasons. And its not very noticeable except to us Pontiac enthusiasts. I rekn if u want all original it would be better to keep the original 16x8 PW7s

I'm disappointed to know that they come with/require spacers and are only 9" wide.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
It's not the rotor that pushes the wheel out, it's the hat.The height of the hub is 1/2 higher on 1le rotors when layed down flat, compared to stock 10.5 rotors

It's great that these are finally being made in larger size, but I'm not thrilled about the offset and the fact that you need the spacer for stock brakes. I also don't like the look of the front wheels sticking out farther than the rears. If these came in 18x9 or 17x8 then I would definitely be on board.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
I haven't touched my GTA forever, just was browsing on eBay and stumbled upon these and was kinda shocked and excited........ at first. This is what I always wanted, until I realized I already have 17x9.5 Vette rims, which I don't think are big enough, 18's would be better, then you'd still have to run spacers even though they are factory? Hopefully a bigger size will come down the road.

Finally mounted the wheels. The adapter is more than enough with the 1LE rotors. So I put a 1/8 spacer instead. Here's a pic, I can almost get my pinky inbetween the tierod/wheel.I shouldn't need longer studs, or do I?What about wheel deflection?

I don't know about anyone else, but what I'm most interested in seeing is shots from the back and front showing how well they fill the wheelwell.

Car is in transition with new engine, so not driving it currently.Tires are BFgoodrich 275-40/17 G-Force sport.
No fitment issues at the moment, but I haven't turned the steering as the column is not connected.
Pics above (& below) are all I have ATM.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
I'm bumping this thread back up just to express my interest and hopes for an 18 inch version of these wheels! I'd be more than happy to make a deposit on a set, just to show my commitment to buy and to persuade Hawk's to get the ball rolling with production with their manufacturer. I understand they want to see their 17 inch version sell well first, though.

For the limited people that wanted them they would sell like hotcakes to the rapidly growing 3rd gen pro-touring community.
I personally would have no problem dropping $1500 for a set.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
It looks like the front has been lowered. Has it? If so, how much, and how did you do it?
I was blown away by how much better your wheels and tires filled the rear wheelwell than Ziggy's seem to. I wonder if it's the difference in the brand of tires?

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
seanof, since he writes it is in transition with new engine and stuff, maybe the engine+tranny is out and it's a roller.. then he probably has removed the struts and springs for a suspension mockup or something to bring it as low as it sits on the blocks in the pics. agree, looks great tho

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
Actually, the eng/trans had just been dropped in a day before the pic.Car has ground control weight jacks & i compressed the jacks all the way down in order to fit them back in.Pic was taken before i adjusted them up a bit, maybe 1".Never touched the Rr. jacks, but it is lowered bout 1.5" (fr. about 1.75").Car is on blocks so I can crawl under it w/ out jackstands.
Ziggy's (& Alans) car dont appear to be lowered.Same size tires though.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
that would be correct mine is NOT lowered. front might even sit a tad high because of weight reduction up on the nose.

Got mine mounted today. I really like the finish. Right now my car is dirty but the wheels are clean so the contrast is really striking.

lookin good those rolling 17" DS! however if we didn't know they could as well be the 16" stockers, jmho wasn't patient enough for your gallery to finally load pics. and one more side-note.. why would you auto-x with open t-tops?

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
I don't feel the t-tops being in makes the car any stiffer. The latches are too small at least on an '87. Now on a 4th gen with those big pins it might make a difference.

I see, good point I guess.. just a random question anyways What rubber you got on there and did you feel any improvement from what(?)ever tire/rim combo you switched over to these?

Before, I had 16x8s with Dunlop SP8000s 245/50/16 in front and 255/50/16 in rear that I put on in the year 2000. The new tires are Nitto NT05s in 275/40/17. It was a massive improvement in all directions.

And removing the t-tops removes a small amount of weight from the highest point on the car giving a token reduction in overall weight and a token lowering of center of mass. Plus it keeps them from coming out on course and leaving a mess behind.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
I went with the Baer Claw 12" Front Brakes, and it moved the front wheels outboard about 1/4" or so, they look a lot like the 1LE front brakes honestly... Which means I did not need spacers when going with 17's.
Anyone doing performance mods on 3rd gens seriously need to go to at minimum 1LE brakes IMHO...

I'm thinking about C5 or C6 brakes but that's down the line. Already spent enough lately.

If you like the Nitto NT05's, you should really try the Falken Azenis RT615K in a 275/40/17 or the BFG Rival in a 255/40/17. We've run all 3 in autox events in our GTA and the Rivals provide the best grip followed by Falken then the Nitto. Unfortunately the pricing goes in the opposite direction with the Rival being the most expensive and the Nitto the least expensive.

We've done some street driving on them in the rain and they did okay. Living in Phoenix we don't get many opportunities to compete on them in the rain. Lots of national level drivers on the pro-touring side run the Falken and don't seem to have any issues in the rain with them.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!
Thanks for those pictures. IMHO there is a subtle difference between these and the 16s. They look good. I really wanted 18s but these may do. The 16s just look so small now that we see cars with 18+ inch wheels. 18s would be max for me. I think a dead on side view pic with the 17s would remove any hesitancy that I would have. I may just grab a set...... I imagine it wouldn't be hard selling them if 18s ever came available. I emailed Hawks too but I haven't gotten any response. I imagine it would be the same as yours.
