My 2 cents.
There are a lot of great tires in 275-40-17 out there: continentals, falken 615k, BFG g-force sports...

Correct there are great tires available in 275/40/17 but there are very few class competitive tires in 275/40/17.

Problem is that the new, competitive offerings are not available in 275-40-17 these days - 275-35-18 is the sweet spot in size.

The question is why ignore the 275-40-17 size when millions of Corvettes, F-bodies, and other cars have them. Let's not forget that in some classes, 18" wheels on older cars is not compliant too.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

Looks great! Finally another option for our cars, 5x120 wheels seem to be taking over.

And 18" version would be nice but not for the reason of tire choice, There are plenty of go 17" tires that will work on this rim. If you are looking for something to be competitive with I'm pretty sure you wont be running a cast replica wheel. You will be running a light weight forged wheel IMO.

Also in for wheel weights.

Another option for crosslace wheels that has been out for a bit now and at half the price is the xxr 536. Comes in 4 color choices. Gold, black, gunmetal, and polished. 17x9 rim size. Probably buying a set here in the very near future. They're actually on sale now for $116

"zero offset and 4-3/4" backspacing"
I am afraid that rear with 275/40 may slightly stick out :/ it's 30mm more then stock 16x8 ET16 with 245/45

I got some pics with 17x9 and ~4.8" backspacing with 245/45
No panhard!
With weight and panhard install it's gonna be very close to fenders
left

right

maybe with rolled fenders i could fit wider tires

99 percent of aftermarket wheels on these cars use the same offset front and rear. It's just too much trouble to source two different wheels in most cases. I actually run four front wheels on my car when the 16's are on it. 17x9s are going to be near the lip, but it wont be that big of a deal. If you get an adjustable panhard bar you'll be able to center the wheels in the car without too much trouble.

Those wheels dont look right if you're trying to get something that's similar to the stock look. They are "similar", I guess, but it's not the right look.

Firehawk wheels are 17" x 9.5" and have a 5.5" BS (or 6mm offset).

Sorry guys I stand corrected! So the firehawks have an extra 1/2" vs the new gta wheel. The firehawks has just over this amount in bs so the wheels should stick out almost the same between the two wheels?

I agree. But when I looked at center caps on their site it said only 16 inch wheels. I assume they've yet to account for this wheel since it is not out yet.

I'd totally expect so. I have 20 NOS lug nut caps and 4 NOS center caps with NOS gold WS6 medallions waiting for my set

These are gonna be so much lighter vs the R-15s I was going to buy, I'm stoked!

Honestly, yeah, not by a grip or anything tho but yeah. The crosslace design wheels was the lightest wheel GM made for a long time. I can't imagine the 17" weighs more than 2-3lbs more than the 16".

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

The ship date is Feb 28th and I'll be placing my order on Feb 27th (I see no point in pre-ordering). Within 2 weeks of that I'll have my gold set mounted with new 275/40ZR17 Toyo Proxes R888 tires (ordering from TireRack same day as wheels) with GM lug caps and center caps.

I'll be sure to take pictures from all angles and post them. My car is lowered with Eibach Pro springs using GM spring isolators so they should look freakin awesome! I'll be sure to take some before pics with the factory gold crosslace wheels as well from the exact same angles right before I swap them, I already have new tires on those for regular street cruising.

It'll also be the big reveal for my new paint job because by then it will be wet sanded (doing this next weekend actually), polished/waxed (gonna let paint cure), new emblems installed, and clear bra installed on the nose

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

this is a great product (as in option for us 3rd Gen 'Bird guys to have), so thanks Bruce and everyone else for making this happen.

I just want to point out the fact that if there were a similar product based on the 88-92 Formula wheel, I would buy it on the spot, practically regardless of price, and regardless what I just paid last week for new tires.

17x9" Formula Wheels - I need 'em bad.

I don't mean any disrespect, but I'm thinking that these wheels probably just aren't going to be for you (not intended for the type of racing you do), and my guess is that for whatever racing it is you do, (1) you already have a set of suitable wheels that support suitable tires, and (2) during those events, factory/show-quality appearance probably isn't a factor.

again, no disrespect intended. its just that after bitching for years that we want 17" GTA (and FORMULA) wheels (for better tire and brake kit options) I hate to respond to that happening by immediately bitching that they're not 18"s.

Lug nut caps for example are out for autocross. I don't know if the rules forbid them, but I want my lug nut torque verified. Tech does it anyway so that people's wheels don't fall off.

That car would look boss dropped 2". Personally I think 17s were the right call. 18s wouldn't look right unless the car was slammed to the ground. I wouldn't say that about all 18s, but I don't think the cross-lace design would scale as well.

They fit the car perfectly. I bet if you put a car with original wheels next to it, the originals would look silly.

We will have the gold available the same time as the black ones. The sample we got in was the wrong color so we got the 9218 Gold Metallic code and sent it to them to use and we are awaiting the 2nd gold samples now.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

Not that it matters much, since classic Ind are china made, but his statement above about waiting for samples.Made it sound like he's dealing w/ a US source.Hopefully he'll reply.

17"s look better on base-level firebirds and formulas. However, Trans Ams and GTAs have larger wheel wells because of their ground effects. As a result, these cars really shine with 18 inch rims.

Hawks, thank you SO MUCH for making these available at a GOOD PRICE! Is there ANY chance of you releasing these wheels in an 18 inch option in the future?

To quote Bruce Hawkins, "As far as the 17-inch GTA wheel, we may have an 18-inch version coming down the line. At this point it’s just conversation, but we’re seriously looking at it. It’s just not set in stone, yet. We’re watching the sales of the 17-inch wheel, and it looks great so far."

That was a nice write up. I'm going to be all over those in 18s! I will wait until those come to market.
