Hurst dual gate from partsplaceinc

Thought I would put a warning out there to anybody thinking about buying a Hurst Dual Gate 2 from partsplaceinc. Their ad says the word "complete" multiple times but there are actually a few pieces missing. Most importantly the transmission control arm for underneath the car. Also its missing hardware like cage nuts and bolts. The mounting bracket for the neutral safety switch is also not quite right, the holes are too big to re-use the old ones and new ones aren't provided. My car is currently sitting un-driveable while I try to find replacement parts. I'll have to either locate a new control arm or try to modify the old one to work with the new cable. Hopefully I'll save a person or two from ripping out their shifter and cable only to find they need more parts, I know it would have saved me some headache.

Re: Hurst dual gate from partsplaceinc

That is definitely a bad-day-maker!!
So a person gets the shifter,
excited to put it in and go cruise, ONLY to find out the kit is incomplete!
On top of that, there is NO explanation stating " 'X' parts not included ".

A simple notice on the site would help a customer order needed items.
It is understandable the shifter can be used for other trannys, but at least give a
" Parts You MAY Need To Complete Installation "

Sorry to hear that still happens in the interwebs by a well-known company!!
Hope you're cruising soon!!!

Honesty & customer service have never been Joe's (owner of The Parts Place) strong suits.

Re: Hurst dual gate from partsplaceinc

To give an update, I got a chance to work on the car again and I have everything mounted up in car. I went to my local lowes to get some hardware. I got some U-nuts, bolts, and sheet metal screws I needed. I've had to do an obscene amount of drilling, cutting, and bending to get the shifter assembly to fit just right. Right now I am waiting for a new control arm for the transmission to come in. Luckily I was able to find one using an original hurst part number I found online in some original instructions. I attempted to modify the original control arm to work but its a no go, I could never get it to hit all the gears properly. I was either not getting all the way to park or not getting all the way down to 1st. I'll post another update with pics of final installation after I get the part in

Re: Hurst dual gate from partsplaceinc

How did you remedy the problem with the neutral safety switch?

I used some sheet metal screws slightly larger than the stock ones

I have thought of trying to see if an original curved Oldsmobile handle (it seems a bit shorter) or an original straight Pontiac handle would retrofit onto the Dual Gate II and if it would look OK.

I also wonder if the handle in that put together "kit" is the correct part for the Dual Gate II or if it's for a completely different shifter assembly that just looks correct?

I bought one of these over 10 years ago and I'm still on the fence on whether or not to install it.

I think a LOT of the aftermarket shifters look tall in our cars.
