Taylor Spark Plug Wires

Taylor Spark Plug Wires
I purchased these Taylor wires from Summit Racing (Part# TAY-74006) to replace my MSD wires. The new wires are a bit thinner than the MSD ones but have better connectors and nicer looking 90 degree boots for the plugs. The wires are for the Gen 1 Chevrolet block and on the Summit site states they fit my 1987 Camaro LT V8. Well, they are a lot longer than the former MSD wires and do not include the remote coil wire, so they are more of a universal fit in my opinion than a specific application for my car listed.
I'm not going to return them as I do like the wires but will be having them cut and crimped at the distributor connection. Still using the MSD coil wire until I get the Taylor wire kit to make a connector myself. Seems like a lot of work but I can live with it. I will have to say that besides the issue of the wires being longer than they should, I no longer have the radio interference as I did before.

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
Taylor wires are pretty low end wires, had a couple sets years ago and was not impressed with the quality. I'm surprised the msd ones gave you trouble. I've used summit house brand ones and skip white ones off eBay with very good results for a very reasonable price

Nope. I've had pretty bad luck with MSD products. Coil failed on me, the wires didn't really insulate against noise frequency. Now that you said Taylor wires are on the lower end even though I bought the better than cheap model they had I'll keep tabs on the performane and longevity of these wires. So far, they have been working better than the MSD ones I just replaced.

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
I have used Taylors for a while. I tested an old set (4 +years) I've had on my GMC pickup the other day when I thought they were causing me issues. Turns out it was cap/rotor. Tested them for resistance against an brand new set of MSD Streetfires I had bought to replace them. MSD were awful...way more resistance than the old Taylors. I know that the Streetfire is the "value" brand for MSD, so I guess you get what you pay for. Others I know have used the 8.8's and they have been fine.
Also, I *think* the Summit house brand are Taylors. They sure look the same.

If you get the latter then they would be longer. Some companies don't offer the option, I know my Mallory's did though.

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
These are for under but they are still too long. I'm just going to go above the headers and cut and crimp to size. Never done this before so I'm going to practice on the old wires. I've done some research and seen some online videos on the different methods used to do the work. I'm confident I can do the job. Btw, never knew there was such a love and hate competition on Taylor vs MSD products. Almost as bad as Chevy vs Ford. Lol

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
I have been using the Summit Brand plug wires for around 8 years now with no complaints. Made really well and I do believe they are made by "Taylor". Come in red or blue for $29.99
There listed as "truck" wires for some reason but are the ones that fit the way I like them on my car. # SUM - 868858R
I'm also trying a set of NGK G-Power Platinum's that I like so far.
( images have been sized down ) = Looks better.... thank you......

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
UPDATE
I just finished cutting and crimping the wires to proper length. I went above the headers and managed not to touch the A.I.R. pipes. It's a very clean job for my first time tackling this type of work. I may not have luck with MSD wires but their crimping and cutting tool for spark plug wires was totally worth the $80.00 I paid. I only had enough time today to work on the left side. The right is going to be a pain in the rear since a lot of pipes and tubes are in the way. I'll take pictures and post when I'm finished.

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
Just did plugs & wires on my 99 T/A. The Talyor wires had 30,000 miles on them. They appeared to be in fair condition but didn't hold up as well as the either set of stock wires or the Magnecors or the MSD's. One Taylor fell apart coming off plug. None of the other wires all of which had more miles and more heat soak fell apart. Not impressed with Taylor, will stick to stock or Magnecors going forward.

Re: Taylor Spark Plug Wires
Next time I change plug wires (Summit Brand) I will cut them open and take a look inside just for the heck of it.
I change the plugs once every 3 years. I only drive about 2,000 miles a year.
At that time I change the cap and rotor and the plug wires.
I don't see any reason not to.
Never had a problem with the MSD cap and rotor or the Summit wires.
Maybe that's why.
