Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Im curious if anyone here as some pictures of the spoiler up close and what vendor they purchased it through. as far as I knew they were all made by the same company but i noticed there appears to be a difference and i wanted to get an idea who is selling what.

Arrow "A" is the front edge of the spoiler the thin edge that you see looking out the back window

Yours looks like mine. I got it at Classic Industries (pickup). It's ... fair. The third brake light has a gap that drives me nuts, though. Can see it below.

Pretty sure only one company makes them currently.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Thtanner, thanks for the response those pictures are perfect for what i wanted to see. I did notice the third brake light area on this spoiler as well.

the center on the top side of mine is warped and sunk down low. its too bad the pictures do not show this very well. I actually thought of putting some cereal and a spoon in the center to show how sunk it really is compared to the sides but i guess i don't feel that would be right to pick apart the defect more than talking about it

Now if we could get some other guys to post some of the hawks spoiler. this may put some of this into perspective if there is more than one supplier making these.

I had made my own spoiler but its been an off and on project for a few years as i do not have the spare time i used to and realized I still have several hours left in smoothing mine out. cutting and re-glassing the spots to clear the glass clip locations. I thought i was biting the bullet and just getting this out of my hair. I will say the vendor I went through has been very fast at the responses and looks to be on a good path for a resolution.

here are some pictures showing the gap at the front and rear of the brake light and the holes are not in the correct spots.

Yea, all my mounting holes were seemingly drilled by a drunken person. Way off, by inches! The third brake light holes weren't even close to centered.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

I talked to hawks this week and confirmed the spoiler they sell is not the same as the OER Classic one. The hawks spoiler is only sold through hawks and no other vendor. I hope to get some up close pictures of that one soon and will post them to compare.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

here are some pictures of the hawks spoiler,,

it defiantly has the correct shape on the top side for the dish,

the tips of the arms are not the same shape as the factory unit.

there is a small gap on the third brake light similar to the gap on the OER classic industries unit but not nearly as bad.

the front edge of the spoiler is not thin like the factory but is only 1/4" squared vs the oer classic where it looked like the side of a 1x4 board.

over all im a bit disappointed it is not identical in style to the factory unit. there is some gaps where it meets the deck lid as well but i expected some of that with a fiberglass spoiler from a non-auto-factory (GM,Ford.. ect)

at this point I feel its at least better than what was on the car and I will be painting it and using it.

I wouldn't use this on a show car - but you have limited options... make your own which with mine im still working on it but needed a spoiler on the car. maybe find a skilled fiberglass shop who would be willing to make a copy of the original or whats left of it.

.

What drives me more crazy is how thick the spears are on all of the fiberglass spoilers. The Hawks spoilers I have do not look as thick but they are still thicker than OE Urethane..

I also noticed mine from classic industries has thicker spears than OEM. The holes were off by maybe 1/16 of an inch here or there but overall id say its a pretty nice fit. Looks a lot better than my old cracked rubber one and so much lighter.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Does anyone have pics of the Hawk's aerowing spoiler installed on a car that shows the thickness of the spears? I REALLY don't like the looks of the spears on the Classic Industries spoiler.

I found this one on ebay. From what I can see, the spears appear to be the same, or very close to the factory ones.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Recently saw one a guy said came from Hawks and it looked almost if not identical to mine from classic industries. I'm not sure if they are built from the same manufacturer. He didn't put his 3rd brake light back on so I wasn't able to check that. Mine does have a small gap there but barely noticeable.

Nope, like i stated above they are not even close to being the same and hawks is their own spoiler no one else is a retailer for it. that is right from the horses mouth

they are bigger and shaped different than the originals but not nearly as thick as the classic OER style. the bolt holes are a little off compared to stock but not bad still bolts up fine no drilling. the other issue which i think has to do with the minor gap for the third break light is the top side is not flat across it actually raise up in the center a little. the right side has a small gap where it meets the glass and deck lid.

hope these help, if it wasn't so late i would bring it outside and take some better pictures so you could see a side shot

I have 2 of the Hawks Spoilers, and I bought a car with the OER spoiler. Hawks Spoilers look way better than the other brands out there. They are closer to the original Urethane Spoiler IMHO.

Bruce,

Thanks for weighing in and clarifying things.

Is there any way you could post some pics of one on a car, detailing the differences between your aerowing, and the factory one?

I look at this, and it freaks me out.

Everyone has different tastes, but to me, those thick spears make it look like a completely different wing.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Having purchased both the Classic Industries and the Hawks spoilers during a previous paint job, we sent the Classic one back as it was an inch too narrow to mount on the car. From outer edge to outer edge it was an inch too narrow to mount to the glass and the mounting holes didn't line up. In comparison, the Hawks one bolted right on. It might not have been cosmetically identical in every measurement to the original but it also wasn't falling apart like the original was. If these are your two choices, go with the one from Hawks.

That looks like a Classic Ind Spoiler... The one on a car that I bought that came with a fiberglass spoiler looks just like that....

I thought the KR spoiler was the 82-84 Trans Am Spoiler and later 87-92 Base Firebird spoiler. They should be everywhere.

I don't think there is a cal for it, just about every 87-92 Base FIrebird in the junkyard has the base spoiler. There are too many out there in junkyards to make them.

Has anyone purchased from showcar in Ontario? I purchased one a while ago and the quality seems very poor. Still trying to work out all the waves. Didn't look that bad at first until I threw some primer on it.

Opposite of their name, I've never heard anything good about a Show Car part, for anyone concerned about looks/fit/finish (show).

They seem to be adequate for racing, where fit/finish are not the primary concern.

That's cheap - just sent a message to find out how much shipping would be.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Has anyone used the wing from summit racing? I was thinking of buying from them buy after reading this I'm not so sure. I still have the factory wing but its pretty rotted out. I'm not sure if its fixable or better off to just replace, I can post pics late to get your opinions.

I agree, once it starts to split, and bulge, not much you can do about fixing them.

Knowing what I know now, and more so after reading this thread, I would not have bought my spoiler from CI.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

I did fairly well on Craigslist, found an original, not rotted out, not even slightly rusted, spoiler. granted I drove 500 miles to get it, but for $200 it was hard to pass up.

Same here.

I'll replace it with a Hawks one when I do a full resto on the car in a few years time. I also have my original, in decent shape to be honest, maybe I can have it reworked.

Re: Fiberglass 85-90 aero spoilers

Picked up a Hawks unit on sale. Here it is compared to the rotted stocker. Im pretty happy with the quality.

Maybe I should mount them stacked like that for some "Fast and Furious" style Biplane cred. Altho I think that only works on Hondas.
