Aftermarket Intakes- is it just MY project?

Getting down to the short strokes of a re-rebuild- really hate these....anyway the engine was poorly put together a few years ago and am redoing the 355 to a 383. The block was zero decked before and now the pistons are slightly proud with a .050 gasket giving me .035 quench- not the issue here, I was using the Edelbrock vortec HiFlo base and had no issues with fitment- now using FIRST and the intake doesn't fit and will have to be milled- the afr's were 'cleaned' up but no major surfacing done. I assumed the shop who does high dollar engines sees allot of these conflicts- they said not really.
Just wondering what the other experience is out there- I'm taking this as another aftermarket product that 'almost' fits.

My Procomp Hurricane is in the machine shop now, wont line up with my 383 zero decked block and Edelbrock CNC heads.
And I thought this stuff only happened to me !

So there's two brothers who build, the one I had build me the 383 does street mostly- the other brother does race mostly, the race guy says he does it regularly. Anyway manifold is on.

Nothings bolt on once you stray from stock
correcting stacking tolerances and somtimes tuning parts up just goes wiht the territory. Be patient and get it good as you can
Honestly a perfect port match isnt THAT important just get it close as you can..better to have the intake a touch undersized than over then run it.

Why won't it line up?

thats why car manufacturers spend a billion dollars developing a new model car , you can imagine the problems they encounter !

the manifold up against the right head has 0 clearance at the top and .010 at the bottom, on the left head it has .020 at the top and .012 at the bottom (and when i say bottom I mean just before it gets to the china wall)
these measurements are consistent front to rear with a (already crushed) 1205 gasket and hand tight bolts in place.

i ran it with felpro 1205 .060 thick and it was sucking in oil on overun into cylinders 2 and 4, oiling up the plugs,
i put on a mr gasket 102 (1206 port equivalent) .065 thick and it was even worse !

Yep.. The intake surface of the heads need to be machined. You can machine the intake, but then if you decide to change intakes again you'll have to machine another.. I normally do the heads so I can change intakes at will without issue.

i have already decided to machine the intake, its at the machine shop now,
I have to move house soon so there is a lot of other stuff to do now, cant go tearing into the engine bay too much, and I am running a hillclimb on 7/11 so just need the engine sorted asap.

Yes intake for me too:
- don't want to screw with AFR's
- heads are already fully installed, easier to do the intake.

I get that, but the intake is not where the geometry problem is. I normally fix the long block, so intakes can be swapped at will without issue.

Re: Aftermarket Intakes- is it just MY project?

This is an aftermarket intake- if it were a GM unit I would agree, and since I haven't measured the intake....but when I port matched to GM vortec plastic gaskets the manifold bolt holes were in question for at least 2 holes. So I have question the machining quality of the manifold.

Got the manifold back, sitting on the engine with a few hand tight bolts and 1205 gasket it is now perfect, you can hardly get a .003 feeler in anywhere.
One issue that was corrected was the gasket surfaces were not completely flat, there was a bow (leaving a gap at the inlet ports) from water port back to water port .

My cousin's engine shop used to run into that a lot. 10 minutes on the belt sander.

Re: Aftermarket Intakes- is it just MY project?

FIRST is an american intake- but still aftermarket, expect anything.

Hurricane is chinese? It would not be unexpected to pay for correction over a similar higher quality domestic intake- and I by no means hold Edelbrock to be THE standard.

I have not had a problem with the Hurricane, mine was flat and fit fine. My block/heads however are machined and geometry corrected.

If you deck the block, mill the heads, and then add maybe a bad day at the foundry for the intake you could be way out. I've flatened intakes on the belt sander but i'd don't normally change the angle because then the intake is junk if I need to use it on another motor. I guess for a $200 intake who cares, but you wouldn't go doing that to a miniram for example. You would never be able to sell it.
