Debating going to a Accel Super ram...opinions?
Im thinking of trading in my ported plenum and AS&M runners for an Accel super ram and runners. I found a pretty good deal on one (if its still there) and am debating if its worth it or not. My setup is in my sig. Right now my car will only pull to around 5400 or there a bouts. Maybe a tad under that actually. Will i notice a big gain going to this intake? Guy is asking 625 for just the runners and plenum.
Also will those runners bolt right onto my edelbrock base?

Good question. I have a SuperRam on an Accel base. Here is a picture comparing the stock, AS&M, and SuperRam with power figures that probably are close to what you're running.
As far as comparing the AS&M vs SuperRam? That's a tough call. It really comes down to how much do you like wrenching on your car and how annoyed do you get working on it?
Anytime you have to pull the plenum off, you'll thank yourself for sticking with the AS&M. I had to get a new fuel pressure regulator a few months ago. Darn SuperRam had to come off. (Keep in mind that the SuperRam bolts in from underneath) Want to swap out your EGR or put new injectors on? The AS&M wins again by a landslide. I can't even check the resistance on my injectors because they're hidden underneath the SuperRam.
I put mine on because I needed new head gaskets and the whole thing was apart. I liked the look of the SuperRam. Would I do it again? I don't think so. I'd stick with the AS&M setup or if I wanted 6000+ RPM, I'd go with a MiniRam.

Hmmm very interesting thanks for the comparison. It looks like i would be trading torque for more hp and not an even trade at that. Eh for that kind of gain i think ill just stick with my AS&M runners.

I too have the super ram set up....... its just horrible to work on, i love the looks and and the power it makes BUT ..... the thought of having to remove the bastard just makes me want to run and hide. Sadly i think my accell base is leaking , and i cant even check the tightness of the intake bolts with out removing it..... GTA

Re: Debating going to a Accel Super ram...opinions?
In my case, I lost a bit of power below 3000 RPM. But gained from 3000-5000 RPM. I shift at 5000. That was years ago. So it feels normal now. Originally I looked at the gains in the picture above and decided to go with the AS&M and got in on a group purchase for them. But that group purchase was horrible. It took AS&M something like 9 months to make all 30 sets of them. I dropped out after about 4-5 months and decided to go with the SuperRam instead. Lots of other people dropped out as well.
My SuperRam would make fantastic power on the street if I went with AFR 180 heads and the LPE 219/219 cam. But I'm just running stock heads and cam. My car is begging for headers. But my GMMG is plenty loud with the stock manifolds. Really, the only reason I went with the SuperRam is that the engine was already apart for head gaskets and I wanted something pretty for car shows.
My SuperRam bolts from the top down and uses safety wire to keep the bolts from getting sucked into the engine. (Airplane engines are built this way) This helps tremendously for installing. But the outer bolts still need to be screwed in from underneath. NOT FUN!
Mine is polished to look like chrome and has a nice red color scheme.
My lid was made by hand (not by me, I wish I could make stuff like this). You can see it here before it was painted. As such, it fits like a manhole cover. Some of the stock lids had fitment issues.
And yet still, when the time comes to do anything engine related, I pine for the days of the stock TPI or AS&M or MiniRam options.

I went from AS&M to Superram and am glad i did. SuperRam is good for another 1200rpm to peak HP on my application and loses very little torque under the curve.

I can't say as I blame you.

If I were to go to super ram I would also do the bolts from the top, I figured the easiest way to retain the bolts is to use countersunk allens and weld a sort of captive plate over them with a hole inside so you can use an allen wrench to tighten the bolts. Just start them all little by little. Would be pretty easy to fabricate. Just need to countersink the top and weld some aluminium over it.

Re: Debating going to a Accel Super ram...opinions?
I've had to pull my superram multiple times. It's just time consuming... After doing it enough times, you get pretty good at it... The gaskets aren't cheap. I just bought tools to make my life easier at harbor freight. Using a standard allen wrench will take you longer than a trip to the store for a ratcheting one with allen bit. As for the rumors about the superram having vacuum leaks if you don't install it properly, I normally coat them with RTV copper so I make sure I don't have any leaks or issues.

Yes I was. Sorry I should have clarified. Did you put Loctite or anything on the bolts to help prevent vacuum leaks? I did this on a friends car to try and chase down a leak. Turns out he had bad gaskets from Accel when they were cutting them wrong.

I didn't use loctite. The threads are pretty delicate... I only used thread lock on the lower intake manifold bolts. Anything with the plenum I go easy with.

I have a different opinion of the super ram. I switched to SR from my LPE large long tube runners. I was very disappointed. I even took the car to Lingenfelter for them to tune. I later increased cubic inches to a 383. My best ET with SR was 12.30. I later went with a Miniram and took the car into the 11's. Im a huge MR fan.

SR 1.6
MR 1.7
The converter wasn't optimized for the MR. Trap speed was 3 mph higher.

I currently have a modified SuperRam, but will be giving the MiniRam a shot this spring. My best e.t is 12.02@113. I'm hoping the miniram will get me into the 11's also. How did the miniram effect the lower rpm drivability? I still want it to be fun to drive around, since I drive it more than I race it.
Thx

Re: Debating going to a Accel Super ram...opinions?
I ran the Miniram on my 383 and then on my 406. Both motors had 11:0-1 compression. What I found out through tuning, with the MR, the motor really responded well to aggressive ignition timing. Even though both motors were different from size, to cam to heads, both ran best with total ignition of 37-38 degrees.
Keep that in mind. The redline of the motor will definately move closer to 6500 rpm. My 383 with AFR 190's, Comp XE 230/236 112lsa and the MR, on the dyno, the redline was 6400 rpm.

I'm using Crower valvesprings prt# 68380X2. They are a 1.460 diameter dual spring with damper. I felt they matched very well with the cam. I also owned a set of titanium retainers and therefore made sense to stay with a standard dual spring.
You'll love the MR.
