Mud Flaps

Ok im tired of getting scratches in my paint from the rear tires. What are your opinion on the flaps? Do they make any good looking ones?

Re: Mud Flaps

There is a member on here with a white sport coupe with flaps on the back. I like the look on his car. But unless you have the power and need them to keep rubber off the quarters, I would say no.

Im not worried about the rubber. I hate driving down the street and hearing ding ding, its pretty much like, theres a chip of paint there and another one.

Re: Mud Flaps

before i would buy mud flaps for my car to help with rock chips i would get rock guard strips or have rock guard sprayed on and them painted to match the car. mud flaps look alright to keep rubber from of the car if you do alot of drag racing but on a daily driver that sees no track time i think rock guard would be a better alternative.

I'd rather have scratches than mudflaps. It's kinda like car bras. They keep the nose clean, but look a bazillion times worse than what they're protecting the car from in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rock guard is a sprayable textured coating that you can apply to the rockers, bottoms of the fenders, and lower quarters. The rock guards texture protects the paint from rock chips, and it is paintable. Look at a newer toyota car on the rockers and bottoms of the doors and you will get a good idea of what it looks like. They also make rock guard that you can stick on and it is clear.

Re: Mud Flaps

I have the factory mud flaps on just the rear of my Formula and they actually don't look bad. I honestly don't really notice them. They are kind of narrow that and don't cover the entire width of the rear tires.

If you don't want flaps, try Lamin-x. http://www.lamin-x.com/ They make a clear overlay that will protect the paint from rock chips and you don't have to ruin your paint with spray on garbage. Plus the cost is pretty reasonable.

Here is a shot of the Formula with the flaps.

Re: Mud Flaps

the spray on rock guard is not garbage if it was i dont think many factory cars would come with it. but the adhesive style works well too but after a while it can start to turn yellow from the elements.

Re: Mud Flaps

Like others here, when I painted my car last year I put "camaro" mudflaps on the back of my car. I was going to put them on the front as well (like I had on my '89 RS), however, with the way the '91-'92 gfx curve in, it is impossible to mount mudflaps on them. The paint job that was on the car when I bought it was all chipped up in the rear from not having mud flaps, so I wasn't going to have that happen again after paying over $2,700 for the new paint job.

I don't know why people have issues with mudflaps. On cars where the rear fenders curve way in and are exposed to chips, I don't see why you wouldn't want to have something protecting the rear fenders. I don't have them on my '97 because there isn't anything really exposed on the exterior of the car, and I don't drive it in the winter anyway (not that I drive the '91 in winter either!)

Re: Mud Flaps

All mudflaps do is create more holes in the wheel well pinch welds that can rust. They also look funny since it'll take 4x4 monster mudding flaps to cover the width of 245's. Just leave them off and watch where you drive your car. There is also no such thing as factory mudflaps. There are GM approved accessories, which include aftermarket mudflaps with GM logos. They're still pretty much worthless since you'll get debris that the mud flaps don't catch anyway.

Re: Mud Flaps

You cant easily remove the spray on stuff and the textured stuff looks like garbage. The film you can remove if you need to and the Lamin-x doesnt yellow supposedly. Plus for the $20 or whatever it would cost ya you can afford to replace it every few years.

Re: Mud Flaps

I don't know why people have issues with mudflaps.
Because they're absolutely hideous IMO. I've taken my share of trophies from many a car show, and I do have some minor little chips here and there. Nothing major though. -and nothing you see unless you're looking for it. -and I AM one of those **** people too.

Like I said earlier, mud flaps look worse than chips by a LONG shot!!!!!!!

No, no, no... it's gotta be the trashy chick profile mudflaps.

Personally, I used them when I had normal sized tires. Now that I have freakishly big tire width, it looked stupid.

As opposed to this:

I took 'em off recently.

I couldn't agree more. Looks the best, inexpensive, easy to replace/repair.
I don't think the mudflaps are that ugly, but seeing a wide rear tire looks really agressive. Mud flaps cover all that up. Oh well, to each his own.

Re: Mud Flaps

Regarding the ROCK GUARD;

i thought id pitch in, because my car has some, and my freind has used quite a few of the coating products on various cars, so i have some valid input.

First off, rockguard was the only one, that didnt "wear out" or chip, or let rust through when sprayed over rust. Its tough stuff.

In does an excellent job at protecting from corrosion too. Before i bought my firebird, it was a daily driver for 9 years. The owner had it painted black, and he sprayed rock guard along the entire "lower" section of the car. As a result, its the ONLY thirdgen ive seen with this many miles, that is not rusted, and has not been repaired or garaged its entire life. There is a RIDICULOUS amount of salt used where live in the winter, so i can vouch for the corrosion aspect.

The only downside comes, if you do alot of detailing to your car. Because rockguard is such a tough product, when you spray it, it comes out in "bloches". Unlike rubberized undercoating, that if you spray from far enough, it has an almost completely smooth surface. Im sure rockguard could be sanded down to be smooth, but it would be alot of work. So if you left the texture there, its a paint to wax or polish. The wax or polish embeds itself in the valleys, and its hard to get off.

For this reason, im debating whether i should use it for my repaint this spring. The car is going from being black to white, and i plan to keep the appearance top notch. ie: lots of detailing.....

Heres a reference for how it looks. If you look close, you can see the texture. But from a far picture, you cant really tell its there.

Re: Mud Flaps

MUD flaps, also protect against gravel, and small rocks and dirt debris on the road. Alot of car enthusiasts tend to live on the outskirts of the city towards the country side, and usually encounter these types of roads.

SO they also protect against stone chips... MUCH more harmful than mud.

Re: Mud Flaps

Most of you guys are still missing the point... Mudflaps protect from the front wheels about 2/3rds back under the doors, then you'll get the rock chips from there to the front of the rear wheels. In the back, you probably won't have any rock chips with or without mudflaps. It's not like they're going to completely prevent rock chips anyway, it'll just make them uneven and it'll be extremely obvious that they only protect so far. It's really only noticable on coupes and Formulas anyhow. The cars with GFX don't get the rock chips along the rocker panels and the lower edges of the doors since they're covered in plastic already.
