Gas Monkey Garage KITT build
I hope this is the right section but the commercials for next weeks fast and loud episode shows they will be building a third gen. It's a KITT replica but still kind of excited to see how they'll build it. Will be watching over here for sure.

I saw the promo too. Can't believe anyone would throw down that much money for a "Kitt" car. Should be fun to watch.

I have Netflix (I usually only watch documentaries), get my news online everyday (tech and science due to my profession). I just don't see the point in getting *** raped in fees for allot of retarded **** that is mostly ads anyway. Biased so-called "news" programs, reality crap, etc. I seriously don't even know how the hell people can even find the time to sit on their *** and stare at a TV for more than an hr a day at the most.

Not me either, That car is why I fell in love with these cars, it made me test drive one, then the fun factor took it from there. Its too bad the original show was so goofy, Its a great concept. If someone would redo the show and do it right, with the original car and actual good driving and acting, it would be a hit.

Whether you like it or not, the Kitt car is the face of 3rd Gens. I like the look myself and I can't wait to see what drive train they put in it.

I tried to see where I could watch the episode online streaming, but there was a charge per episode, forgot if it was the Discovery site or iTunes.

Re: Gas Monkey Garage KITT build
they left in the 85 center console and wrong style door panels
left in the "t" handle shifter
and didn't need to waste time making tail light housings
obvious that no one had done any research as to what should be correct on the car

yes, i get that they used an 85 but i still expected those kinds of details to be correct. Going out and finding the right year console and other parts to switch out on the car.

Not like KITT has any value. In the future more and more kitt's will be turned back into Firebirds...this will happen when Firebird average value will be @30,000$.
liked the movie and car but hated the part with the f**** up amount of cars destroyed to make it.Also hate that if you have a black Firebird its automatically KITT.The grow in price will cut this BS down....maybe harsh but this is the truth ,at least my truth

Re: Gas Monkey Garage KITT build
wish you were right but you are not... when you see a 70s bandit you think Smokey and the Bandit if you lived during that era. it will stick to us black f'birds too. hope you are right on an average f'fird going for 30..lol I can dream but thats all it is. Mine would go 50-60 then but I know that wont happen unless the value of money declines faster than it is...
and btw i live in europe and Ive seen only in germany more kitts than Firebirds.I find that really annoying...but then again every person can wreck their stuffs.
P.S.If you think your money go down in value you should see euros ...1.30€ for 1 litre of fuel .Thats about 1,7$ per litre ...a gallon has 3.7litres iirc so a gallon of gas in germany would be 6,30$ ...if that would be the price in US there would be riots

Re: Gas Monkey Garage KITT build
If they built the car out of a stock trans am it would have been better to watch I'm sure. But watching two hours for basically a tail light install (which I thought were awesome btw), and a montage was kind of a waste. The only interesting part to me besides looking at a third gen was the story of the replica they bought. I might be mistaken but I believe there was a thread on here discussing the craigslist add of that same car.

that car was awful! i cant believe it!! the best part of that episode was christie!!!!
did anyone happen to see the runners on the motor?? dent much???? and being an 85 would that not have been one of the not so good TPI year setup's? given only 2 weeks i understand some of the neglect but some of it was in excusable hopefully a fellow third gen guy will win the car and restore it right!!!

Re: Gas Monkey Garage KITT build
Most don't care for the thirdgen platform. They remember the slow thirdgen with the crappy V8 because thats what most were. And as they got older they remember the rusted out heaps that weren't cared for.
Keep your thirdgen clean, head to a cruise night and it will be appreciated. Take that same thirdgen to a mall and the younger crowd will deride it as a ******* POS.
One day they will be appreciated, but that day will only come when all of those rusted out heaps that should have gone to the junkyard finally head there. Leaving only the survivors that have either been cared for, or repaired and modified.
Look at the average prices the higher tier Thirdgens are going for on Autotrader now. Its about $2000 higher than it was several years ago. I'm seeing not so low mileage thirdgens with people and dealers asking between $7,000-$11,000 for them, cars with between 50k and 100k on the clock. Not saying people are getting that money for them, but they are beginning to ASK that much for them.
______________
Also, as an owner of a White 89 TransAm GTA, I'd love to get $1 for every time someone asked me if it was a TTA. I'd be rich enough to buy a TTA.

I'm a smokey and the bandit fan, but I've always had a thing for 3rd gens, so I'm just doing my version of the two combined... Still more tasteful than a KITT replica.

I'm still pretty much a noob to fbods. I saw the comment earlier about so many 3rd gens wasted to film the knight rider series. Does anybody know about how many they destroyed?
Just curious is all, I love those kinda facts.
I think I remember hearing long ago that they averaged trashing 9 or so chargers per Dukes of Hazzard episode, but not positive on that.

iirc from the knight rider forums 200+ were destroyed and some of which were cars with flaws from GM
oh and check this out Jim Duffner's RENO 911 Car Jump.avi - YouTube

Also, the back-end kicked up so hard because the ramp was shorter than the cars wheelbase. When the front wheels left the ramp, the rear springs were still decompressing and pushed the rear of the car up. To fix that they'd need a longer ramp with a gradual incline.
A great number of the KITT cars came from a train wreck so they couldn't be sold to the public. But they were prefect for filming Knight Rider.

Did you see that thing flex at the fender/door gap as it hit the ramp in the slow mo replay??? Wow! Obviously no sub frame connectors either.

I'm really shocked they didn't put some kind of roll bar or cage in that thing for the wreck. I know its TV and all and seeing a cage would be kinda distracting, but I could live with that knowing they were taking precautions.
