To all... The recall is there and is still valid.. You must locate the document online and take it with you to the dealer.. The Chevy computers tell the dealers there is no recall.. The document online specifically calls out VIN numbers and clearly states that dealers must repair it regardless of the age, condition, or ownership of the car.. Make sure you get the correct and full document off the internet and not just the summary.. The regional manager had to approve it for the dealership but I got it approved. As long as you have that document, they have to do the repair. I will try to find my copy of it and give it to the moderator to post here..

I just posted the document in complete including the internal Chevrolet memo's and letters to dealers as a new thread with Document in the title. Maybe it will become a sticky.

Too Cool that you found that document.
I wish that GM had recalled the 86's. My 86 had the same issue, which is going to be my winter project.

Can I still have this recall done. I just bought a 91 RS recently and stumbled onto this page. I dont smell a gas odor but this kinda makes me nervous reading this!
P.S. Sorry to bring this back up just concerned.

First, try to make sure it is leaking at the neck. Remove the gas door then remove the inner cover behind the gas door that surrounds the filler neck. Take a flashlight and shine it down the filler nect to where it connects to the tank. A dark stain around where the filler neck is attached to the tank and running down the side of the tank will tell you that it is leaking. Yes, the document says they have to honor it. Print out the document, read it thoroughly so you can point out the important parts. Take it to your local Chevy dealer and ask for the service manager. Show him the document and tell him you want them to fix it under the recall. It will do him no good whatsoever to look in their computer system as the info was purged years ago.. He/They can not avoid the hard copy from GM headquarters ordering the recall and repair.. The one I went to had to get approval fromt he District Manager but they did approve it... Good luck..

If you have a 90-2 tank just have the neck resoldered and have the tank PSI tested.
The "new" aftermarket tanks won't have the 1LE baffle like the 90-2 tanks do and you could have a cornering stumble with less than 1/2 tank of fuel.

Wouldn't matter since you didn't modify the tank. Unless you modify the tank then your screwed. But if you didn't then the recall still applies. Same would go with the seat belts. Those recalls wouldn't change like for example if you changed the paint color.

Well, just got off the phone with the local Chevy dealer. They say there are absolutely no more fuel tanks in the GM supply system. As per the NHTSA website, will call Big GM and NHTSA as well. I think I have missed the boat on this. Might be time to look into the installation of a 4th Gen tank...

Re: Gas Tank Recall...Read if you have a 1991 Camaro RS.....
We had the fuel tank on our 86WS6 changed out a couple of months ago due to a crack in the fuel neck. Our car was never included in the recall, however it had the same problem as the cars that were recalled. We wanted to maintain originality as the car has 31K actual miles, is mostly original, and is all stock. I ordered a Dorman replacement tank from Summit Racing and it fit perfectly. The fuel pump that they sent did not fit my car. We are still not sure what it is supposed to fit. We went to NAPA and they were able to provide a direct replacement pump.

I understand you said in seems it only affects the RS sub-model. I have a 1991 Z28 and I am wondering if this recall includes the Z28 as well.

skip91 above said that he was told there were no new gas tanks in GM inventory, that was in 2016 (post #261). Even if they wanted to honor the recall, they wouldn't have a tank to give you. Aftermarket replacement seems to be the only option at this point.
