Looking to get any idea regarding removal of the stock decals and all residue prior to priming for paint.

Should I just sand them off???

Whats the best way to do this?

Use a blade. Some people use a razor blade. I only like using one by hand for smaller decals. The holders dont give you quite the feel. A sharpened 5" applicator blade. Sanding the blade will sharpen it. The key is to try not digging into the paint surface (Captain Obvious) I usually will try thinners and bondo dust to remove the glue. The thinners softens the glue and the dust helps to ***** it up. Test a small spot out of the way first.

Sanding isnt a great option imo

You wanna do it with zero chance of damage to your paint?

Get you one of these..... Pinstrip Removal Wheel. Other types are available. Any paint & body store would have them, or worst case...A body shop might sell you one.

After peeling the side door moulding (I have a heat gun) from the side of a factory black 97 Tahoe in 2002 (so 5 yr old paint), the eraser (we called it) removed the left over adhesive & did ZERO damage to the paint or its finish. Just a good wash afterwards, not even a polishing!

They aren't the cheapest, but WELL worth it. You'll be SURE not to damage your paint with one of those!

Stephen is right about the stripe eraser wheels, they work great. But there is a chance it may damage the paint on an older car, depending on the type of paint thats on the car and wether it's been repainted or repaired and partially painted. The eraser wheels will ruin a lacquer paintjob and it can damage any air dried paint that doesn't have a hardner in it.

If your getting ready to paint anyway it's certainly possible to just sand them off. But peeling them off and cleaning up the goo with an adhesive cleaner or wax and grease remover would also work.

THanks for the quick replies... I was going to have at with a razor blade and some "Goo Gone" to get the adhesive off. I do like the idea of the wheel. I got this car for almost nothing and I just put in a 350/290 hp crate in it. Its still at the builders. I plan on removing decals, pulling the ground effects off fix VERY Minor dings and chips and have it repainted. I already have new Headliner, Visors and carpet ordered. The seats are flawless. Its a college graduation present for our "Boy Wonder".

Why would you Spend the extra $30 when you're going to repaint it anyway?
Maybe stephen didn't read, or maybe you changed your mind, but you said "prior to priming"... If you're going to prime it why bother with the wheel?

Because that wheel will take it of in about 5 minutes, when you could spend a considerable amount of time with goo gone and a razor blade. Then sell the wheel on EBAY.

If your taken off the hood bird none of the above is to easy if its as old as the car.They are right but it will not simply peel off.I used an eraser wheel on a cordless drill to remove as much as possible.Then get about 2 cans of decal remover and a set of plastic razor blades from a body supply shop.let that sit about ten minutes and use the plastiic blades and a bunch of rags to remove the remainder of the decal.If you try to sand it off that also sucks the decal clogs the paper fast.Good luck

That decal eraser wheel works very good. I helped my dad in his body shop redecal 350 AMR ambulances (yes this took a while).

I know your painting the car anyway,but the wheel will zip them off and not knick the metal or paint like a metal razor blade will if you not very careful.

There are also special plastic razor blades for doing things like this,but quickest way is with that eraser.
