extreme door hinge wear

Hi guys,

I've taken my door off to change the pins and get rid of the sag, and after some grinder accidents and setbacks, its just about done.

The top hinge has no play at all.

The bottom hinge however is still very loose. The pins and inserts fit fine in the removable hinge part, but the inge part on the door is very loose. I guess the pins have worn too badly into the holes.
the only solution I can see is to drill out pin holes enough to fit some spare inserts and then put the pins in.

anyone got any other fixes?

Re: extreme door hinge wear

Drill out tap and put in threaded rod drill rod to correct size for pin

Re: extreme door hinge wear

Would that work?
There's not that much meat on the edges of that hole, and by drilling it out further wont that put more focused pressure on that part of the hinge?

most threaded rod is a very soft metal and wouldn't last long.

Get a brass rod the same size as the pins, put it in, fill the slop with weld and remove the brass.

Another idea is find another hinge w good holes and weld them under or over the exsisting holes to reinforce them.

Re: extreme door hinge wear

Would using the brass inserts from the door pin kits work just as well?
As I only have to drill the pin holes out to about 10mm for the inserts to push in, and then they are the exact size of the pins, and the other hinge will hold them in place?

It sounded good to me when I saw I had extra inserts and thought of it.

Re: extreme door hinge wear

Would that put a bushing on both metal hinge areas? Not sure Y it wouldn't work unless the clearance between both hinge parts isn't enough.

Re: extreme door hinge wear

Possibly at First, but I was going to mill it down to size when its in the hole.
Pretty sure clearance will be ok.
I'll take plenty of pics anyway and post them if it is successful as a possible fix if it works.

I think that sounds like a reasonable idea. I'm in the process of rebuilding my hinges as well so I know what you are running into. The one thing I noticed is that it seems the factory was trying to keep the pin moving with the door (serrations at the top of pin) so the wear was at the pin/bushing. If you put bushings at both places then it wouldn't really matter.

What did/are you doing about the detent roller pin & roller? Mine was trashed so I ordered the lower body side which has new roller. Man these hinge parts are expensive. You could spend $500 easy replacing them all!

Yeah, I had the full hinge pin kit that had the roller and pin with it as well.
I tried pulling the roller off, but without a vice, oxy torch or a bench, I gave up and handed it to a mate. He heated it up and knocked it out and put the new one in.
The actual metal piece of the detent bit was my problem, the horrible pressed fit pin had come loose so the roller was on an angle, I smashed that out with a hammer and old pin, and then put a bolt and nut in its place, using one of the remnants of the old inserts from the hinge pins to allow it to rotate.

The play in the bottom hinge was solved with a washer on the bottom and now feels much better. There is still a slight bit of movement, but when the spring is put back in place it should tension it up and get rid of that play.
