88 gta strip and paint. pic heavy step by step!!!

I have 20 years experience since I first held a gun or did any type of body work. I hold a degree in autobody. I love third gens like no other. and this site has helped me when I was green at third gens.

This is going to be an SPI car here is a link to their products.

Re: 88 gta strip and paint. pic heavy step by step!!!

I really want to help people on this site get their third gen looking the best it can. recently my camera got coffee spilled on it.

No Worries I have one coming from amazon, so this thread will roll forward soon.

what I am doing now is removing the 3+ paintjobs that are on the plastic ground effects.

I take a piece of 80g sandpaper and break the skin of the paint. not a lot of sanding needed here just a good scuff so the stripper can do its magic

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0483&ppt=C0171

spray a generous amount and wait until it wrinkles up. scrape the paint of with a razor blade in a holder.

then after you scrape the paint off run a hose over it and scrub it with a green scuff pad that you can get at the store.

dry and repeat until you get to the factory paintjob. then use 80g on a DA- dual action sander, lightly at a slower speed, and remove the factory color and leave most of the primer.

then take off the factory primer with 180g on a da.

the plastic stripper is not as strong as the metal aircraft stripper. it only takes off one layer of paint at a time. someone may have different results than me.

I work on military aircraft, actually stripping coatings off. I'm curious how that stuff compares to what we use?

I'm going to end up getting (I believe 3M) plastic paint stripper when I do mine. I'll do it layer by layer until I have all the paint off the bumper, I'll then give it a couple of days in the sun after to allow any residual chemicals evaporate out.
Covering the panel with saran wrap/garbage bags after you apply the stripper will let it work a bit better.

Have to be careful, the stuff used on Aluminum will be different than what we would want on the plastic bumpers on the cars... But I'm not sure exactly what you guys use. *I'm now in training to be an ACS tech in the Canadian air force (after 8 years as a medic), the ACS guys are refinishers, machinists, structure repair and life support equip.

I have stripped most of the plastic parts and stripped the body and put it in epoxy primer last year. Soon I will be putting the quarter panel on so stay tuned. I promise to post pics of the quarter panel job.

Re: 88 gta strip and paint. pic heavy step by step!!!

Hey jamon8, i'm brand new and looking for a welcome tab, just to get to know some folks.
I seen your posts and your expierence and figured i'd start here. I currently have 2 third gens and going to be starting on one of them this spring. I see you are a senior member and am asking if you can lead me to the right people and posts.
I'm playing this re-build a little different, I just finished up a 2 year resto=mod on a 85 Yamaha Maxim 700, Only after the 1st year did I find a great forum group that had the knowledge that I didn't have and with the great guys there , I was able to learn and complete areas of the bike that I would have never been able to do on my own, So with that learning lesson , now I will do a lot of research first and try to learn from those that have done it before I even start and i'll save tons of time and money. So what do you say ? want to guide me thought this next rest-mod, 89 trans am 305, 4sd auto ???
