T-Tops, Carbon Fiber Style!
Not sure if this new thread is a Body or Fabrication thread, but it made more sense in the Body Forum.
Anyways, I am about to embark in a new project for my track GTA in order to shave more weight out of it. Just as the title says I want to be able to mount a targa top into my stock t-top F-Body, but without touching the brace or roof of the car leaving unmolested so I can switch from targa to t-tops and back anytime I want.
The plan is to make a mold of the t-tops installed and make a one piece targa top out of carbon fiber. In order to remove the unwanted and inevitable center mark were the t-tops join in the center of the roof I will have a low profile center roof scoop molded into the carbon fiber targa top. I will use this roof scoop to throw in fresh air into the cockpit. In order to keep things simple the targa top will not be weather proof, so if I am using the GTA just to cruise around and starts raining I'll just keep the t-tops in the back and make the change in a flash. The new carbon fiber targa top will also be speed tested, my GTA is currently making about 145mph in the longest straight, but will be speed tested flat out style somewhere...😉
Ok, so here is the deal, maybe some of you might be interested in one. I already contacted a local that works with carbon fiber and have made lots of parts for different race cars.
He asked me $600 for the targa top!!!! Since is only one piece and he has to make a mold that most probabbly will use just once, but he also told me that he could slash the price to $400 if I can manage to get group buy of ten or more.
So here is the obvious question; Who here is seriously interested in getting one?

Should be nice and @600 thats a good deal. I made a CF one when I did my old traga conversion. Only diff. is I cut out my center bar. I used stock front and rear side pins from my 92 Tops and for center latches I did the vette style latch.

I might be interested if it was done without the "roof scoop". Been concidering a targa for a while.

It was slow, but finally my wish was granted!!! I received this past week my custom ordered carbon fiber t-tops with naca ducts!!!
They are a perfect fit and super ultralight!!!!!
Will take more pictures during the day. This next weekend there is a road racing event and I will put them to the test @ 145mph which is the highest mph my GTA goes in the longest straight.

Re: T-Top to Targa Top Conversion, Carbon Fiber Style!
Hmm. Quite possibly a Group Purchase is in order? I'd like a set but I'm working on a winter car and other more important parts but I'd definitely like to have a set in the future. There is a guy on here (and another mentioned it above) that is doing the Targa top in carbon fiber (like the Toyota Supra) with a 10point rollcage since the center bar will be removed. I'm curious how either (t-top and targa in CF) will hold up around a track and getting sideways (not just taking hard turns) and throwing the weight side-to-side is my ultimate worry.
I'd like to see more from these guys. $600 isn't a bad price at all. I might even sell my t-tops for some cash back on a set lol. Adios for now. Pictures of the inside and maybe removing them too. VIDEO!!! ;P

That is SICK! Its probably better that you didn't do the Targa conversion. I cant imagine a way for this to work without cutting the Tbar, and since you are obviously racing, you wouldn't want to compromise structural integrity. How much weight did you end up saving, and how much did they charge for the CF t-tops? If they still have the mold, might be interested.

For those interested in the carbon fiber T-Tops, there's going to be a Group Buy.
Here are some of the preliminary buying terms and conditions:
The Group Buy carbon fiber T-Top offer is for 10+ buyers. Buyers participating in the Group Buy will need to pay in advance thru PayPal. Once the Group Buy reaches the 10+ participants mark, the T-tops fabrication will start for all 10+ group buy participants. Shipping order will be simple; first in, first served.
If for some reason the 10+ mark is not reached all the payments received will be returned minus PalPay charges if applicable. I reserve the right to cancel any transaction at any time.
The Group Buy special offer price for the carbon fiber T-Tops will be $350.00 for the pair, that's $175.00 per piece + shipping. Shipping charges are going to be a fixed price for US, all international shipping will be quoted. An extra charge of $50.00 will be added for NACA ducts, $25.00 per NACA duct on each T-Top.
All transactions will be made thru me, BBSDesigns and I will take full responsability of the sale transaction and the shipping of the parts ONLY. I will not be responsible for the parts use or how do you plan to use it in general.
For those members who dosent know me or the name BBSDesigns, well I've been around this forum for quite some time and ran a turbo business a while back, making turbo kits for our cars and other SBC. If in doubt, ask around who BBSDesigns is. If you still feel doubtfull, well then please dont make any business transactions you may feel uncomfortable with.
Carbon fiber T-Tops and it's usages. The manufacturer of the T-Tops is offering the carbon fiber T-Tops ONLY for non-moving car or as an ornament use only. Carbon fiber T-Tops are not intended nor recomended for regular street use or racing purposes.
The Group Buy is in effect now.

YES!!! Real quick though. Please start a new thread in the Group Buy section of this forum. Thanks thanks thanks. Lets not flood this thread any more than needed.
Onto the reaction...
$350 for a pair? X-Mas came early ;P ;P
Post tons of pictures in good lighting and maybe even make a video of you taking them off and putting them on. From the inside, out; from the outside, in. I'm pumped for this and have a good feeling we will pull it off.

BBS Designs, these are cool and I would like more information. I think these would be just right for my white RS. When you tested your pair how was the fit & seal? Any increase in wind noise? How much difference in weight between glass ttops and the carbon fiber ttops?
