Hood gas shocks help?

I have a 1984 z28, and I recently had a 4 inch fiberglass cowl hood made. I know I need different gas shocks for the lighter hood, but some people have told me i need to measure the old Gas Shocks? Is this true and also, is there any brand of Gas Shocks that I should consider for the lighter hood? Any help will be appreciated, thank you!

or yank some old ones off a car in the yard that don't hold up the steel hood anymore
