Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

I just picked up this 87 GTA this weekend out of Casper Wyoming, 29,000 actual mile car. Everything works on it which is amazing. Regretfully it has sat outside for the last 12 years on and off. It only has surface rust, my question is there something I can use to chemically treat the rust versus just grinding on it, to remove it? It's only surface. Thanks

Oh, don't waste your time with that car. Sell it to me and be rid of that headache.

Ok, this is the first application of it. I let it sit for about 13 hrs. I followed the directions unlike the guy in the YouTube video. Will need more applications and scrubbing.

The thing is, evaporust will evaporate if it sits, reducing it effectiveness. You might want to soak some paper towels with it and spread them out on the effected area.

Check out these results when you hook up a pump and recirculate a similar product.

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

I'd venture a guess the reason the rust developed in the first place is because the clear, then the paint flaked off. If you remove the rust, you'll either be down to the original E-coat, or bare metal.

You can either mechanically remove the oxidation (grind, sand, blast, wire wheel, etc) and reseal, or you can stick with chemicals and trying to convert the rust into something less volatile.

Assuming you aren't soaking the roof in Evapo Rust, the method they suggest on the bottle of soaking a towel in Evapo Rust and covering with plastic to keep it from evaporating works OK. I'd expect it'd take awhile, and consume plenty of product.

Acid chemicals like the cleaning supplies shown above will usually cut the surface layer of rust, but on heavy rust usually you'll have to treat the surface, then abrade down to rust and treat again, and keep repeating until you don't get rust when you sand the area.

I probably wouldn't waste too much time and effort on chemicals before switching to a sander. You're going to want to strip it down all the way to steel before repainting anyway since the exposed factory primer is shot.

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

Ok, thanks for the info, I really appreciate it . I just figured if it would remove as much as possible before I start sanding, the better off I am. I work long hrs threw the week and can only work on it on the weekends mostly. I'm going to get the rust killed then prime and paint the roof. Atleast until I can paint the whole car. I've done some painting before and it turned out pretty good. I want to hone my skills before I decide if I'm shooting the whole car or having it done. I have a friend that has some experience with this and we have a good body shop called Camaros plus here that has been very helpful.

For the amount of rust that there is, a good DA sander would take care of that hood and roof in no time flat. You could even use a Dewalt palm sander and be done with it. I sanded the hood of a 89 GTA with similar rust clearcoat issues in about a half hour, then primed it.

this.

I've always been told that the only way to remove rust for paint is to sand/grind/ wire wheel the area down to fresh metal. those chemicals never really "remove" it and I would be hesitant painting over "neutralized" rust due to the risk of it bubbling the paint.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

Obviously if you are going to paint it, you'd sand it down. But........if you aren't going to paint it and just want a cool patina'd look without the rust, these methods work.

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

Oh I'm painting it. The car is too nice to not paint. Just figured if it would help remove some while I'm at work and less to sand this weekend. Who knows, I had a Oreilly coupon and paid 4 dollars for it. Figured I'd give it a try, atleast I know it won't hurt anything. If it doesn't help then I know..

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

This was after 24hrs, it got most of it this time. My question is should I just use etching primer after I sand it or do I have to put more then one type of primer before paint?

Re: Surface rust on roof, 87 GTA

So my friend and I were talking about spot painting my car, after looking at it more we decided that it would look odd just the hood and roof being done. We ended up doing the whole thing. This is only the first coat, and is still wet

Needs wet sanded but pretty decent considering it's a home job.
