Painting black areas on formula tail lights same color as the car?

Hey guys!

I was thinking... I have a dark red formula with the standard 91 tail lights.
Has anyone ever tried to paint the black areas on the tail light in the same color as the rest of the car?

I'm thinking it could look a bit like the 1st gen... If I do this i'd probably tint the orange indicator with red tint and do a thin layer on the other red parts to make it somewhat the same.

Thoughts?

I've seen it done. Kinda looked hideous. Brought back memories of the 87-93 Mustang GT tail lights, or some of the styled tail light covers of the mid-90's. The darker the color the better, but personally it's not a style I care for. FWIW.
