C4 Rear Discs?

Is it possible to put C4 rear discs on the rear of my Camaro? Its a 92 RS with the 10 bolt rear. I have drums now on the back and want to upgrade to discs at some point. I happened to find the C4 rear calipers with mounting brackets for a good price and was wondering if they would fit.

Also, I currently have the 15" standard aluminum Camaro wheels and don't want to change them(call me crazy, but I like them). Just want to make sure this setup would fit under the wheels if I can get it to work.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Yep, read the sticky a couple dozen times. However, I assumed they were talking about putting C4 front calipers and rear rotors on the front of a Camaro since I haven't been able to find any threads about using C4 rear calipers on our rears. I want to make sure if I put rear calipers and rear discs on the rear of my Camaro that they would fit under my wheels.

Yes, I figured they should clear since the fronts do, but I wanted to be sure since I'm looking at using the rear calipers, not the fronts. I don't know if they are any larger/longer than the C4 front calipers.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

With C4 12" front discs and thirdgen PBR calipers on the rear all you need is the brackets to convert them. Bolt on deal. You need C4 FRONT!!! rotors, not rears. Offset is wrong won't fit.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Not C4 FRONTS, I'm looking at putting C4 REAR calipers on the REAR of my Camaro.

I already have the C4 front upgrade planned out. I'd like to upgrade the rear from drum to disc. There are 2 sets of calipers I'm looking at putting on the rear. One set is C4(84-90) REAR calipers. I'm not sure if they will fit, but I can get them for a great price so I'm asking if they will fit and work on my Camaro.

The other set I found for about the same total cost is a complete rear brake setup(calipers/brackets/mounting plates/ebrake cables/rubber lines/rotors) from a 97 Z28. The rotors are 11.5", so I believe they will fit my wheels. I am assuming they are LT1 and not LS1 brakes, but if I'm wrong please let me know.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Dude, I said C4 front rotors on the REAR of your car, the c4 REAR rotors have the wrong offset. The C4 FRONT 12" rotors will work with 3rd gen PBR calipers if you have the proper bracket...like this:

93-97 are LT1's, though they're virtually the same as the 89-92 versions. This second set may be the most efficient way to go, simply because all the parts seem to be in place. Could be, however, that the hoses and rotors will need replacement and/or the calipers rebuilt.

Twin, are you using the standard OE-type backing plate?

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

No, got it from Ed Miller. IT's different because of the larger rotor diameter however if you simply measure the stock thing and put it in a cad program and change the caliper bolt circle diameter to suit the increase of rotor size you have the drawing for the new one.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Twin_Turbo - Sorry, I misunderstood what you were getting at. However, will the front rotors work with the C4 rear calipers as well as the thirdgen PBR's?

JamesC - Thanks for confirming the LT1 info. As for the lines/rotors/calipers, I plan on rebuilding the calipers no matter which set I get. The lines I'll eventually replace with braided and the rotors looked fine in the pics. If needed I should be able to have them turned and if not, I'm not really any further behind compared to getting just the C4 calipers. I do kinda like the idea of being able to say I have Corvette brakes at all 4 corners though since I'll be doing the C4 front upgrade. I've always been more of a Corvette guy than an F-body guy.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

The C4 calipers will fit, the abutment bracket is the same but the parking brake setup uis not. The 3rd gen PBRs are bolt on and you can get the right cables for them (short style if you have an adjuster in the tunnel, the longer if not)

If you rebuild the PBR's, take note of the "free travel" adjustment.

I liked the idea of matching front and rears, so I went the 1LE set-up, though I must admit when I was upgrading, the 1LE was, with the exception of Baer, the only real ticket in town. I'm satisfied with my choice, however. Should you wish to see pics, check my Car Details below.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Thanks guys, this is the kind of info I was looking for. As much as I'd like to have a matching set, I think I'm gonna go with the LT1's. With everything already there, it just makes more sense from a cost standpoint.

On rebuilding the calipers, are they similiar enough to the 89-92's that I could follow the steps in my 92's shop manual? Or should I look for a rebuild guide specifically for the 97's?

Yes. Also the rebuild kit will contain directions.

Yes to both but you need to understand a few things. C4 rear calipers are the same casting as '89-97 F body rear calipers. That said, they'll bolt on but the e-brake won't hook up and the bleeder screw will be on the bottom.

Just use LT1 calipers and pass on the C4 rears, the hassle is not worth the cost savings. If you want a slightly larger rotor you can use a C4 rear rotor which is a full 12" as compared to a stock 11.6" F body rear disc, but you'll need different backing plates to make them work. Also, the rebuild kits don't always have rebuild instructions with them. I have some extras somewhere but can't find them and won't look for them until the new year.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

A rear rotor? I could swear I used the front rotors, the rears didn't fit (I had a full set left) as the offset is wrong and the caliper won't center over the rotor then.

Re: C4 Rear Discs?

Yes, old post but Im in this boat right now and would like some insight on what my options are.
I will be converting from drum to disc this winter and would like to get a matching pair of rotors for the rear. Currently, I have the C6 Z51 front brakes with Baer Eradispeed 2 pc rotors. Baer does not sell this rotor in 11.6" for the rear. They only sell it in 13" and Im not sure it will fit inside my 17" Weld RTS wheel. So, I can go with the 12" Baer Eradispeed one BUT its for the C4 rear.
Twin Turbo, you said you are using FRONT C4 rotors on the rear because the offset of the C4 REAR rotors was wrong but Ed says that C4 REAR rotors will work with the correct backing plate (which I assume is the one he sells).

Whats the deal here guys? What 12" rotor will work for me? I need to buy backing plates no matter what.

Will these work in the rear with 4th gen PBR calipers and 12" custom backing plates from Ed?
