83-88 cars had delco calipers that had to be rotated to compress.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
I have 3 1NCR5 springs left over from when I did mine. PM me if interest.
Don't ask me if it actually worked because i can't tell you. when I went to bleed my rear brakes it reminded me of when I play Basketball- nothing but air. They do work alot better now however.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Just a quick question. When you unscrew the bolt to get at the original spring, does brake fluid squirt out? Or does the reservoir have to be empty before you unscrew it?

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Just swapped to LT1 rear brakes, got the internal from the disk proportioning valve and installed on my drum proportioning valve and it worked perfect.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
I just read through this but I want to know - has anyone actually tried this on the older 82-83 combination valve? I am installing a new MC this week and I wanted to give this a shot. Just wondering if the spring and spring pressures are the same.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
I just did this mod to my 82 TA with the Kelsey Hayes proportioning valve. I am not sure I like the results. It is raining here so I couldn't really give a good test, but the backs seem to lock before the front at times. When I took the spring out I noticed the original was about 1/4 inch shorter. I am not sure if this made a difference, but It might have less room to move. I may take it apart and trim the spring a bit to see if it makes a difference.

stock - 39.8mm
1NCR5 - 37.52mm
1NCF2 - 38.02mm
I never tried the 1NCF2, but with the 1NCR5 I am not able to lock front or rear brakes. I'm quite pleased with the results.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
I'd like a 19lb spring.
I'm assuming it'll work in a 87, never saw that it wouldn't in The thread

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
This is what I did. It may not be for everyone but it's a compromise between stock and the 19# spring.
First a little background. My car is an 89 IROC (late 6/89 car- 2 design) with the "performance/1LE" J65 rear disc brakes~ 11.6 rotors/PBR calipers. I have upgraded the front to stock LS1 with ceramic pads and stainless lines. My proportioning valve is stock for this model. The rear calipers were gone through with new rotors and semi-metallic pads. Like others I felt the rears could do more but didn't want a rear lock up issue as this is a street driven car. BTW I have a good parking brake.
I used the brass banjo washers used on the caliper hoses to shim my stock spring. I picked up an assortment at the local auto parts store. The ID (.380") of the washers are correct but the OD needed trimming down to .510". I scribed a line around the washer with my dial calipers and ground the majority on my bench grinder. The final few thousands I took off with some 220 & 400 paper wetted with WD40.
I used an .032" washer on the end of the spring where it touches the valve and an .062" on the plug end for a total of ~.094" shim. This dimension was used because it basically was the most I could put in each position and still have enough pilot to center the spring well.
The only feedback I can give is that it feels better. I have great brakes with this setup but the rears don't lock up in the wet. My goal was to not over-bias the rears. However, with the larger LS front piston area I felt the rears needed a bit more bias & this is a compromise between stock and the 19# spring.

Re: Cheap Proportioning Valve Upgrade
Well I just got done swapping this spring in (Thanks 396lsx!) and to be honest I don't feel a major improvement over stock. I'll say that the rears to feel a little more active but not the big change I was expecting. Still not a bad upgrade for a few bucks.
