Wow......that's all I can say is wow

My mother always told me if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.......so I'm going to keep my mouth shut on this one

BTW..I hope you have that box secured to the floor with "L" brackets so it doesn't go flying in an accident.

Edit: I just realized that your relying on carpet friction to "hold" your box inplace....not very smart.

And when you get a chance, I would suggest going here and do a little reading http://www.caraudioforum.com/

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

your car your likes. but i would have spent the extra ten minutes and ran the wires with the factory harness or plugged in the factory wires.
just my opinion, im very detail oriented after doing specialty auto wiring and modifacations.

L brackets! Carpet friction is not enough if you get into a collission and HIDE THOSE WIRES!! It probably took your more time to buy the tubing than it would have taken to run the wires out the bottom of the plastic (under the 6x9's)....what you have now is pure cheese!

Yeah I know, I'll probably get around to them.

I mean this is my first car and I'm a senior in high school, working when I can, from these responses it really is just a downer to see such negativity. I really like my setup.

I don't have a problem with low end equipment, what I don't like is people that don't take the time to install it correctly. That's my problem with your install.

Like others said it doesn't take money to tuck wires under the plastic....throwing split loom on them instead of doing it correctly is asking for people to mess with you.

No biggie, take it with a grain of salt and make sure you bolt that box down

Let's use this as an example of what NOT to do! That is the most ghetto setup I've seen in a long time. If you like how you did the install, how it sounds, and looks, so be it. But to post it up encouraging others to do it too. Shame on you. If you can't afford to do it right, can you afford to do it twice?

Ya, and in an accident, do you really want that "box" flying up and hitting you? At least mount/attach it!

Sorry, but with all the help available. It's not that hard make an install look good.

But seriously, you REALLY should secure that "box". How would you feel if, god forbid, someone pulls right out in front of you. That box is going to continue it's foward motion, and could really injure you and/or your passengers.

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

I just graduated from Highschool. There's no problem using low end equipment. When i first bought my Camaro it had two 10" sony xplods with a crappy amp and crappy speakers. I simply took the time and effort to make it look nicer and rocked taht setup for about 2 or 3 months. I saved up a bit of change and bought 2 10" Rockford p2's an alpine amp, an alpine h/u, alpine 6x9s, and rockford 4x6s. And i'm going to be upgrading all of this again.

One of the most important parts is installation. take your time and make a clean installation. A few hours on a saturday or sunday will take of this problem and your setup will look cleaner and you can be even prouder of it.

Hey FlowmasterRS--what happened to the thread? Did you delete all of your posts and pictures?
Sorry if we hurt your feelings! I understand you were only trying to share a cheap way to get better sound in your car. The only issue anyone has had is with the installation.
Sorry you felt you needed to delete all of your posts and pictures.

i apoligize if i may have hurt your feelings but some tough love may have been in order.

It's fine and I'm all for people giving their opinion, and by no means did I expect everyone's opinion to be positive, but saying things like "shame on you" and "the most ghetto setup I've seen" really crossed the line...you guys have made me embarassed about something I was once a little proud of.

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

When I started doing car stereo when I was 16 I was fortunate to hook up with a group of ricers that liked to go over the top and keep it looking clean. Now almost 10 years later I have done show cars and comp cars and I can say that keeping it clean is what earns respect not really the equipment. Anyone can spend thousands of dollars on a car stereo system (have a friend who has over 14gand into stereo) but the real compliments are on the install and the sound. My system set me back about $700 and I tried my hardest to hide everything and make the wires, and mounting perfect and now I have 12 speakers perfectly hidden in my car and it took me about 4-5 days to get it just right. Take your time and think it out and make a set plan within your means and ability and then execute it and measure twice before cutting or drilling and you will save more money taking your time and doing it right the first time.

I didn't see any of the pics but I can only imagine but I have done a couple systems where I had to cut some corners to fit a budget or time. But you will run into @$$ holes in every car forum because someone out there just wants to have the bigger d*ck and being in highschool you know it all to well so treat it as that and shrug it off. I stopped going to car club meets because of the elitist jerk offs that get together and pick on you and your car because its not cookie cutter. But overall please secure the box down because people have been seriously injured from large things flying around in the cab of the car, when I was getting tips for autoX a guy took out a ruber ball and put it in the cup holder and by the end of the track it was in the hatch area.

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

I'm sorry that you feel that I "crossed the line". But I just call it as I see it. Kinda like that black camaro on eBay that you negatively commented on. It's my opinion, but I feel that, along with a few others, that it could be a better install. I just don't think when a job is hacked/unsafe, that others should do the same. This forum is a tech forum for improving 3rd gens! 3rd gens already have a certain "stigma" about them. That black car on eBay, and yours, to a certain point, falls right in line with that "stigma". And I'm sorry that I don't like it. But you have to remember, it's just my opinion.

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

Seeing the pics, it won't take you long to hide those wires. Instead of coming out of 6x9 location, just extend the wire behind the plastic and pop up through the carpet.

then secure your box with some brackets. L brackets cost maybe $5 is all.

Where is your amp located? Just make sure it's ground is short, and you have all your wires fused etc.

If you decide to use L brackets to secure that box, be aware that the gas tank is a 1/4 inch beneath that hump. Don't drill screws into the hump, it's just not a good idea.

He's not using an amp which is why he spliced wires off the 6 X 9's

OH!
I didn't realize that...

If that's the case, then you're headunit is not seeing the correct load. Not sure how you have that wired, but head units typically can go down to a 4ohm load.

If you have everything running in parallel then you could have a 1 ohm or less load there on each channel. You could fry your headunit outputs.

Yeah I think I'm just going to remove the box in general, I can't secure it (as someone said the gas tank is right underneath, I found out yesterday) and I definitely don't want to fry the headunit (stock, for now).

Just as an fyi--you dont have to spend an arm and a leg on an amp (especially for the small box you want to run).
Here's an example of a decent amp for under $65 shipped:

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

Thanks for the help. I don't know how serious I want to get with the sound system, it's not a big issue with me. I find tuning the engine and other exterior/performance things to be more rewarding. I know of some sweet deals in the area for sound parts too, a few of my friends installed over 1,300$ worth of a system into his Jeep Wrangler. had two 12" subs, 6 speakers of various sizes, two amps, all the works. You could hold a block party with that thing as the music setup. However, scumbags broke into his car and stole all of it a few months ago, another reason I don't want to overdo anything.

Re: Sweet deal for 20 bucks (pictures)

dont take anything as a putdown but as a suggestion. as i said before tough love. i dont have mommy and daddies money either. but i have learn how to do things in a clean and precise matter. wheen i was turnin wrenches a few years ago we did everything on anything, upward of half million dollar cars. so it became habit of doing clean installs and show worthy projects. several cars we have done are featured in several magazines and seein your work in something like that is worth the extra time.

just take a few minutes and clean it up, the more you can conceal the less people see wat you have and are less likely to do anything..
