Capacitors look cool and "everyone" thinks you need them, heck I used to be one of those people...now I know better!

BTW...Awesome work!

Re: Build Thread: HQ Sound & Bass in a Vert, No loss of space

Wow Shroom, that is an amazing build! You have some great design skills. I had the same problem with the stereo system for my vert several years ago. Since I had no rear seat, we built a custom box in place of the rear seat. It had two JL 10's. I had two amps driving all of the speakers. The system worked very well while I had it. Making a convertible sound good is a hard job!
Since the latest build of my car, I removed all of the stereo equipment and sub box. All of that stuff weighed over 150 pounds! With my new build, I am going to do something very simple. Should help shave some pounds on the build.

That is incredible! The advice for amateurs I've always heard is to not mix different size subs. How do you EQ those 6.5s in there to compliment the big guy?

Coming from you, that says a lot. Your car is is top notch and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I didn't do a before and after weight, but I don't really care. I'm adding a Magnacharger in the next few months to overcome any weight problem. Judging by the UPS shipping, I know there's at least 60 pounds of sound deadener.

Thanks,

While the 6.5"s are technically subwoofers, I'm using them as mid-bass drivers. The Audio Control piece is a three way crossover with EQ. The sub and door speakers don't play the same frequencies. The door subs only play from about 70-120hz with the top up or while parked. Top down at highway speeds I bump that up to about 150hz to overcome some of the wind noise.

It's manual right now, but eventually the EQ controller will be tied into the OBDII port and a sensor on the top. Planning on having it automatically change EQ and crossover settings based on the following:

1: Top Down, Engine Off
2: Top Down, Engine On
3: Top Down, 35MPH+
4: Top Down, 60MPH+
5: Top Up, Engine Off
6: Top Up, Engine On
7: Top Up, 35MPH+
8: Top Up, 60MPH+

Re: Build Thread: HQ Sound & Bass in a Vert, No loss of space

Kevin,
I had to read this entire piece again. Man...you have some amazing fab skills! The system you built up is so awesome! Hands down, this is the best set up in a thirdgen I have ever seen. I am getting ready to do my stereo system. I have decided to go with one 5 channel amp (Fosgate 1000 watt 5 channel amp), upgraded speakers in the dash, and the rear sail panels, and a custom stealth enclosure of two 10' subs in the area of the rear seats. The sub box will be the hardest part since it will have to be shallow and sit on top of the transmission tunnel. I don't want to get too crazy with this build, but I do understand that you need a lot of power to the speakers when the top is down.
Anyway..thanks for the inspiration! BTW, do you have any pictures of how your electrical connection terminates in the engine bay? I am looking for a clean, stealthy connection to the battery.

Thanks again for the compliments. There's pictures of the wire terminations in the thread, though there's not a good way to make 1/0 cable stealthy. It's dual 1/0 ring terminals on the battery. Negative has one to body, one to engine. Positive has one to power distribution, one to alternator.

Your design is discreete, well thought out, built, installed with no portion over powering the visual senses. Interior door panels have the appearance as though it was a factory option of a high end system. Your modifications to the dash give an illusion that the replacement head unit was a easy plug and play design. Are you toyally unaware that aftermarket systems must assault both visual and audible senses when installed?

If you can't tell I'm loving this system, the overpriced system that was in my wifes Camaro when I got the car was the first thing to go. That is one hell of a job you did.
yeah, I don't see a single TV screen. LOL

Not too much. There's a reason it's taken 9 years to get to this point.

Got the Side trim and kick-panels/sills wrapped:

Stitched the arm rests and wrapped the handle and switch trim:

I've had the doors temporarily assymbled for about a year and half now. Still making excuses to not pull them and finally wrap the speaker pods and finish everything.

I did find a way to offset the extra weight:
