Sub Replacements for UQ7
Anybody got a recommendation for decent subs for the UQ7 System with the Gain option? Factory replacements are LONG gone.
Thanks

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
I just rebuilt mine.....well actually 6 of them. They sound really good. I recommend finding a broken pair and fixing them. they are not hard to find if you look everywhere lol, and most of the time they just have bad surrounds. which can be replaced for about $5. check out speakerworks. they have everything you will need. PM me if you need help with repairs. Also i have working ones for sale if the price is right.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
there is always the possibility that they might just be too far gone meaning they will need a whole cone replacement which is a lot of work. the next thing I recommend you doing is too once you receive your new surroundings glue them under the cone first then center the cone/voice coil. before you do all that make sure you scrape off all the old surround and clean it off with some alcohol. I went as far as using sandpaper.

So, here is what usually happens. Foam just dies and falls away. I actually seen it happen to this one, found it with the foam still fully intact. Did not last long lol.
make sure you scrape along the sides fully, till they are clean of debris. The under the cone scrape the old foam off there. Be careful not to cut the cone.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
when your done with that, now is the time you glue the new surround in. Apply glue on the surround first, then slip it under the cone. Don't worry. The cone is tough, you can move it a bit. Now flip the sub over and push down the foam to the cone. after that apply more glue if needed. IMO more is better, then flip and repeat. The glue dries clear so don't worry about it looking bad. Takes 3-6 hours to dry, or let sit overnight

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
After the glue under your cone dries, now it is time to center the cone. You do this by pushing down on the cap of the speaker, and listening for scraping/etc. If your speaker has good rebound (pushes back), and you hear no scraping, your speaker is fine. Buts if you hear scraping, and are unable to center the cone, this is usually a tell tail sign that your speaker needs to be re-coned. When you glue the surround down to the speaker its self, remember more glue is better. After you glue it to the speaker, you can glue your cover onto the top of the speaker. If you don't have the cover its ok. They are there just to protect the speaker. I have ran the subs before without them. But if you can, try to make one.
And that is basically it.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
Thanks for the tips and pics! I'll do this when the replacement surrounds come in.
It's kinda funny that I'm actually gonna repair a STOCK speaker! I have thousands of dollars in aftermarket systems in a few of my cars and now I'm fiddling with this stock system!
I just feel that the factory system in this 85 is kinda neat. Kinda nostalgic!
IDK, call me kookie!!

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
Its actually a really good system IMO. Seems like it has too much power, and it is easy to over power the subs, but if you have the factory Head unit with the eq controls, and you fiddle with it a bit to find that right setting. Its sounds great.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
I like the Challenge, It's a whole lot easier just putting in a aftermarket subs(if you can find any this size) I made a commitment to myself to keep this car Stock and a couple of subs aren't going to change my plans.

What!?! I just tried ordering some online at various stores including Summit Racing and was told by all that they were now discontinued and were not available
Just checked gmpartsdirect.com and it also says they are discontinued.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
One slight problem with that is that the original 4x6" speakers in the back are 4 ohm rather than 10 ohm like the fronts. With 10 ohm speakers in the back they wont be as loud so you'll have to play with the fader on your radio to balance the sound out.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
One way, when you are buying them, to tell if it is a dash or rear speaker is to check the connector. if the connector is the type that is connected directly to the speaker, its a dash. If it is the type that goes speaker-wire- then female oem connector. Its a rear.

Re: Sub Replacements for UQ7
In my 1984 Trans Am, the front speakers are the 10 ohm (16033662) speakers. The rear 4x6" speakers are 4 ohm and have a connector on the two wires.
My subwoofers are different from the ones shown previously in this thread. Mine are 4.5" subs (diameter measured from opposite areas between mounting holes). It appears that larger subs were used in later years.
Here are the subs I am repairing:
Note the inverted replacement foam surround. From what I read, being inverted should not matter.
