1991 Camaro RS: stereo single or double din?

To me it looks like a double din,but on Sonic Electronix it (where I hope to buy my new one) is showing single dins. Am I wrong? It just looks so much taller than a single. It is the stock stereo,so there's no chance somebody swapped it to a double din.

it is 1.5 din the after market does not support 1.5 din anymore ,thats why you see single din, there are kits that adapt those

Yep, GM and the other manufacturers were using din 1.5 at the time, and even though millions of cars were made with that radio size, the aftermarket never embraced it.

So you can use a din with an adapter, or you can modify and stuff a double din in there.

For single din...check out Humount mounting plates.

Re: 1991 Camaro RS: stereo single or double din?

Other options you can always modify your bezel, and make a double din fit.
That's what I did.

There are some 1.5 din stereos out there, but I know nothing about the quality of them. They are not from the normal companies. I remember someone posting one on there not too long ago, it was from a Jeep forum.

Re: 1991 Camaro RS: stereo single or double din?

The double din installs that I have seen in the Camaros look terrible. The trim has been cut and Im sure the wiring has all been jammed into the back. The HUmount looks great even though it forces you to use a single din radio. There are plenty of quality single dins out there.

I want to get the HUmount for my 91 but I have yet to find one that somone chose the yellow led. Its either yellow or white for me and Id rather have yellow IF if matches the factory yellow in the 90-92 Camaros. if not then white it is and I will figure out how to tint the led with some sort of semi transparent lens paper assuming it comes apart.

It takes some work, but i think the work I did on mine turned out pretty good.

I was just throwing options out there.

Putting a double din in these cars is not plug and play.
You can get a wiring harness adapter, so I guess that part of the equation can be plug and play.
But due to the size of the radio opening(din 1.5), you have to do some modification to the bezel to get one to fit.

Re: 1991 Camaro RS: stereo single or double din?

Good luck getting one of those HuMounts. The guy making them sucks at returning emails and I have heard of customers who paid for one and 2 months later havent received their kit. I emailed him back in Feb and I havent received a response back yet. I gave up and bought a regular install kit on Amazon.

Plug and play if you have a harness adapter. Otherwise you have to get a wiring diagram and match up the factory wires to the appropriate wires on the aftermarket stereo.

Ya if you get the harness adapter it's the same wiring wise as any other aftermarket stereo.

Modifying the Bezel isn't too tough, see the link in my sig on how to do it.
You will need to also cut/modify the HVAC vents to get the larger deck to fit all the way back. I cut mine then used duct tape to basically mold a new duct the size I needed. Seems to be working.

Re: 1991 Camaro RS: stereo single or double din?

Another for the DD mod.No wire jamming either. If you take your time & think it out, you can cleanly route your harness.

Minimal vent trimming, DD fits w/ no gaps.
