what kind of speaker plug is this?

i found this speaker plug in the dash. Do I have to cut these plugs off to install aftermarket speakers or can I find direct fit speakers? In my other firebird this plug is not there its just 2 grey prongs.

Thats the stock plug. You can buy an adapter from Metra.

If you don't want to cut those wires then this is what you want. Comes in a pack of two. If you replace the rear speakers you'll need a set for them too. I bought some speakers from Crutchfield and they included the adapters for free.

Buy and use the adapters for sure! Unless of course you are going to upgrade your speaker wiring or something. I have been using the adapters for over 15 years in my 92 GTA and never had an issue. I got mine from

Drive me nuts when people cut wires on cars lol.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

If you've got a pile of junk OEM Delco speakers from the 80's and early 90's you can make your own adapters. The male half of the connector attached to the factory speaker can be salvaged easily, then just desolder the old wires from the terminals, clean and solder on new leads. Of course this makes the factory donor speaker trash, but it's easy enough to find trashed Delco speakers, not to mention replacing a speaker is a lot easier than replacing a hacked up harness.

One other thing... Almost any 4x6 will fit in the Camaro dash, but the Firebird dash generally has less room for a large speaker magnet. In the past I've generally used an adapter plate to mount a typical 3.5" round speaker in the Birds. It's easier to fit and usually sounds better.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

Just buy the adapters from Crutchfield. That way you'll get the right part for the right location. I seem to recall there being two different adapter options for the rear speakers. I needed to make sure I got the right ones.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

That link I posted is the same adapters as what I got from Crutchfield. No need to spend more money on them than you need to.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

I see what you mean. That's strange. Didn't know they changed them on late years, but they look like the proper plugs from your picture. I'll keep looking and if I find something out I'll let you know.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

Well I did some cross referencing and the adapter I posted the link for is for the rear speakers. Crutchfield claims those do work for your year. This is what Crutchfield says they are for the front and I went and used the part number to find them on Ebay since they are half the price. Same brand.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

Just order the proper one for your year. On my 87 IROC one of the previous owners hacked off the harness and its long gone. So I had to buy the proper adapter for an after market stereo and an original reverse plug to put a factory style plug back on the factory car harness. I don't know if you would be using the same adapter as me or not. This is what I found in a quick search for 91 Firebird. You'd want to double check.

Re: what kind of speaker plug is this?

These are what I ordered back in 2009 and use:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207100...s.html?tp=3097

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207100...s.html?tp=3097

I ordered 1 of each, they are sold as a set. I used them for my front and rears.

...and yes, buy an adapter for your head unit, so not hack the harness.
