Radio harness pinching with radio installed - Recommendations needed

Hello, I am dealing with an aftermarket Kenwood radio installed by the previous owner. I had the same issue with a Pioneer radio.

The issue is that with the radio installed, it pinches the harness between the back of the radio and the instrument panel/center console. As if there is not enough clearance between the radio and the console itself. Has anyone else dealt with this? Looking for any solutions - it's shorting out my speaker wires.

would only short the speaker wires if bare wire or a metal connection is touching, electrical tape should fix that.

on a second note, I'm going through the same exact issue after putting the correct center console in my trans am, there isn't enough room for the harness when you slide the radio in causing the radio to stick out a little bit. I'm gonna see if there's a certain way to route the harness so it clears.

edit:its also a kenwood radio

x2 on checking for, and fixing, any exposed wires.

Some options:
  1. Get a radio mount that moves the radio out. I've seen 1/2", maybe 1".
  2. Be really careful where the wires are routed as you install the radio.
  3. Modify the metal bracket at the rear. This is normally used to support the rear of the radio.
  4. Using adapters to plug-and-play into the factory harness plugs can lead to bulky wads of plastic and wires in the back. Shorten wires, remove plugs as necessary to minimize the stuff behind the radio.

FYI, see my build thread for the 1xDIN head + 1/2DIN EQ that was factory depth/flush mounted (not #1). While the console was out, I built a new metal rear support (#3) that provided the necessary clearance. Test fitting the radio to the console while on the work bench was nice. Getting the console to the workbench is a bunch of work!

It ain't fun packing everything into that little radio pod. But with some repeated efforts, and careful re-arranging, I was able to get the factory 1.5 DIN radio, and the LARGE connector adapter for a later model radio, and 3 additional harnesses all tucked into the pod. But it was a fight. I had to walk away from it more than once.

Not to high jack the thread but I messed with mine today. I shortened the wires and still couldn't get it to sit in there completely. The back of the radio hits a plastic lump in the back of the pod. Tempted to just cut off a little and see but it's too cold out to be messing with that stuff now

Is it this one Tyler? The pocket where the locating pin on the back of the factory radio fits?

Thanks for the input. And you guys are correct - I misspoke. It's damaging the wires and/or terminals because they are pinched. I have an intermittent open. Moving the wires causes my rear speakers to tune in and out.
