put on new carb...low idle..smoking.. help
Hey, I am new to this fourm so if i posted in the wrong place I am sorry. Well my friend has a 1986 trans am with a non factory 302 in it. He was having trouble with being to rich and other things so he decied to switch it over to run a non elec-controled (vacum-controlled) distributor and carb tuned for a 350. The change whent over with no problems, however when we started it up it souned diffrent (exhaust louder). It is now idleing very low, very laggy very hard to get up to speed, and burning oil very badly. Can anyone think of anything we could have done while instaling the Distributor and Carb that would cause these problems. It was running fine before. Could the timing being way off casue the oil burning problem? Or is it something with the carb?
Thanks for the help

Does not sound like a carb problem, re: burning oil...
Need much more info.
-Is that correct, 302?
- Which carb ? part #, brand, any info
- what do you mean tuned for a 350? someone recently remove it from their 350? was it rebuilt?
- What distributor? factory style?
The more info you give, the more accurate help we can give Welcome to the boards.

sorry its a 305 HO 85 trans am motor. The same thats supossed to be in the car. The carb is a factory quadra jet off of a 350...reclenty removed was running fine on 350. Factory disbutor of a later 70's 350 (vacum controlled) was also working fine before removed.

We we got it running better. I belive it was a timing issue. However we are still wondering about a small wire that conects to the bottom of the carb's throttle arm. Its not the throttle cable and its not the crusie control. It smaller than them but it connects onto the carb the same place they do

Which side does this wire go to? Passenger or drivers? I don't think there should be any electrical wires on the drivers side below the throttle cable....

The only other wire/cable that should be on the passenger side of the carburetor is the Throttle Valve Cable, also known as the kickdown cable. It connects your transmission to the throttle and is very important to the transmission. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR WITHOUT THIS CABLE BEING INSTALLED AND PROPERLY SET. If this cable is not connected or set improperly, it can burn the tranmssion.
