I just brought a new carburetor for my 1985 Chevy Camaro 305. I’m replacing it with a new edelbrock 1406 carb. I install the carb but there is a huge vacuum leak somewhere. The engine is idling very high as I tried adjusting the screws and nothing is happening. And I having a hard time understanding the emission and it kicking my a$$. Has anyone installed this type of carb and can anyone give me tips on the wiring or any part of the installation.

aside form the usual comments about edelbrock carbs....

did you hook the brake line up to the rear of the carb? there is abig hole there for it.

are all 3 of the lines on the front of the carb hooked up or capped? one goes to the pvc, the other 2 smaller tubes are for vacuum advance.

what emmissinos question do you have?

Thanks for the reply. I plug the hole on the rear of the carb. I had a Rochester quadrajet before and there were a couple sets of wire connected to it(a two wire set and a three wire set and the electric choke) what do I do with the wires. As for the emission I can’t follow the diagram any more so how I’m suppose to hook this up. Is there any kind of installation manuals specifically for my car?

there should be a single wire for the choke that you can hook back up to the carb. The other wires are usless now because the quadrajet was computer controlled, the edelbrock is not.

Not sure about the emission diagrams, maybe try using "search" and see what you can come up with on here.

as for plugging the hole in the back of the carb, where is the line for the brake booster hooked up now?

I found the fitting and just installed to brake booster to the carb.

Ok let my rephrase the question about the emission, I just wanted to know where I’ll hook up the vacuum lines too. I know the middle one goes to the PCV, but what about the left and right ports? And what should I do with rest of the system. Just plug them all? Or do I need them?

OK I still have a chance to return this carb to the store. If I do so, what kind of carb should I get for my car? I just want to get my car running again.

One of the ports in the front are for the vacuum advance on the dist, and the other may be plugged. which one you use depends on the rest of the engine and if you are using emission controls. I don't use any emission controls so I use the left and the one on the right is plugged. these are the ports on the front outside of the idle screws.

I'm assuming you didn't change the stock distributor, which you need to do if you put an aftermarket carb on.

The right carb was the one it came with. You will not, cannot, improve on it for basic street use with anything available on the aftermarket.

Take the Edelbrock back. Put the stock q-jet back on and hook things up the way they are supposed to be. You never said why you got the Edelbrock, or how you bolted it to the stock manifold (which it won't), but fixing whatever may have been "wrong" with the stock q-jet is the right thing to do, not putting something different on.

Well the reason I got the carb because the q-jet is flooding everything. So I went with a new carb, this is all news to me; no one told me I had to buy a new manifold or a distributor. For some reasons I find this hard to believe.

The 1406 won't bolt to a stock manifold without an adapter. If you managed to bolt it on, it isn't a stock manifold.

The distributor is a given. If it's the stock computer controlled distributor, you can get the car to run, but you'll never get it to run right.

A flooding carb means the float, needle, or seat has a problem. Usually it's crud that has gotten into the needle & seat. Simple and inexpensive to fix, a lot less expensive than a new carb, distributor, and what it takes to get them installed.

hi , if you want to install it right ..go to edelbrock.com and look for their tech videos ..it has a step by step installation and adjusting and troubleshooting set of videos,,,very easy to install,,,basically if you have the stock intake you need an adapter to install your 1406 carb on to....then facing the carb on the left or passenger side -you must plug in your distributor there and the pvc in the middle and usually plug the right side completely off assuming you have a hei distributor...then at the rear make sure you plug off completely the middle vacuum ,,plug your booster to the intake manifold ...then your timing and all adjustments must be made...good luck.

ok. well i have a 1406 and i dont have the option of going back to the q-jet. what kind of aftermarker distributor do you recommend? im sorta on a budget and i can get it to run but man. so many problems with it that its not even funny. i looked up a vacuum advanced distributor that was designed for the car (the id numbers begin with 2) but its like 100 bucks. what could i do to fix that?

what kind of distributor do you have now?...is you engine stock?.
do you have emission control on it ?. egr valve?..let's start with these questions....then we can see from there

the stock distributor that came with the car is what im using right now. the egr and emissions are all gone.

I had to return the edelbrock carburetor. I got the running for a little bit. I did remove the emission, and the car smells horrible. So I don’t want to be that guy in the street. So my plan is to rebuild the engine, ensure that all the gaskets are in good condition. Rebuild the original carb.
