I picked up an ss hood last night, and im wondering if there is any gains from the "ram air" scoop? Does it actually draw enough air in there to benefit a carbed motor?

At what speeds is it functional?
Im debating if i should close it up because of rain issues.

Im running a standard edelbrock air cleaner and it does sit behind the scoop.

Inputs appreciated.

only benifit would be sucking in cool fresh air instead of hot underhood air. wont give any sort of "ram air" effect. which it looks like you have a cowl already. you can seal the air cleaner to the cowl and achieve te same effect without worry of rain water.

by "standard edelbrock aircleaner" are you refering to the triangle mesh one?

Oh no not the triangle of death air cleaner. I have the standard edelbrock circle air cleaner they sell at most auto part stores.

So the ss hood does not render a ram air effect? Instead its a sort of cold air induction?

The back of it is sealed the only opening it has is at the scoop area.
Thats a bummer i would figure it would push in good ammounts of air enough for a "ram air" effect.

the air stream of our cars pushes the air right over it. unless you go with a really tall scoop, or get one that hangs off the front of the hood onto the bumper cover, youre not gonna get a "ram air" effect. its just supplying cold outside air.

It's mostly about cold air, regarless of the method. Even a properly designed forward-facing scoop only adds about 1% at 100 MPH and 4% at 200 MPH (square of velocity kind of equation).

Cowl induction does provide real ram-air effect by virtue of the fact that the base of the windshield is a high pressure area, but not as good as a forward-facting scoop. I have a cowl induction hood on my Malibu and any stray leaves that get into the cowl area readily suck up and stick onto the cowl screens above about 50-60 MPH. So it's higher pressure than underhood. But it doesn't take much to move leaves around.

Ditto what Damon said about the cowl induction effect. At best, it's worth 2-5hp from the cold air coming off the bottom of the windshield at speed as oppposed to the hotter air from the engine bay. I've got an 84 T/A with power bulge hood which does the cowl effect. Ram air is what the hood scoops that face forward give you, which is much better of an effect. Unless you seal the cowl to the air cleaner, all you're getting out of it is a hot air vent for your motor.
