Starts with starter fluid but immediately dies

Hello all, I have an '84 with a 350 and a Holley DP 650. My car has sat for a while but today I tried to start it. The battery has drained so it would only turn over while being jumped. I got it to run for about 30 seconds with no starter fluid before it crapped out. After that it would only start with fluid and die nearly immediately. What should I look at first? My thoughts are fuel filter first then pump. Anything else I need to look at?

Filter and pump, in that order.

You running a mechanical pump or an electric?

few other things could be; get fresh gas, float needle sticking, clogged bowl vents.
best luck bringing her back to life!

Fill the carb's fuel bowl through the vents in the top with FRESH NEW gas, with an old detergent squirt bottle or something. Start it up and see if fuel gets pumped up to keep it going. It should run quite awhile, probably 10 - 15 seconds at least, off of just that. If it runs and then quits you know you have a fuel delivery problem; if it keeps running, then it just hadn't run long enough before, to move the fuel all the way from the tank to the carb.
