Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

If i'm not mistaken, '88 was the first year that GM sanctioned a company to make the convertables. '87 would be a car that the dealer or purchaser of a new car sent to an aftermarket company, whose name is escaping me at the moment, of which the company would then take the t-top car and convert it to convertible. Definally not factory.

Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

Is it a 2 seater or 4? I have an 85 2-seater converted by Autoform from the dealer. There are about 500 or so of these conversions ever made from 83 to 87 model years. Have any pix? Wut area u live in?

Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

I have an 87 GTA vert, converted by ASC. It is one of the rarest GTAs over here in Europe.

Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

ASC started making convertibles for GM in 1986. I dont know how many TA's were made, but it was not many. Officially, there were no TA convertibles until 1991 but ASC made quite a few before then. I saw someone toss up a ~170 number a few days ago, that may or may not be accurate. You will need to verify yourself if its an ASC converted car (they did the conversions for GM) or some other company that cut the roof off.

Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

Actually there have been some 1985 ASC preproduction cars. ASC and GM did a joint project to come up with the Camaro convertible which was officially released for 1987. ASC was doing special dealer orders in 1986 and 1987, not sure about 1988, on the Camaros. Pontiac was not blessed with a convertible, due to several reasons, the most likely is the fuel economy, as a Trans Am or GTA weighs more than a Camaro Z28 or IROC.

In 1987 ASC produced some 173 Firebird convertibles, in 1988 104 Firebird verts were made and in 1989 a whopping 324 or 330 were made... There are also a rumored 3 1986 ASC Firebird or Trans Am verts, I know of two.

Of thsoe years, only 1989 has been fortunate enough to have a Convertible 350 model, in 1987 there are a known 4 IROC 350 converibles that were converted by ASC.

The only difference between an "Official" Convertible and an aftermarket ASC convertible is the VIN, otherwise they are identical, pieces and parts swap from one to the other, the quality is the same, everything.

I have an 88 GTA convertible and I'm in SE Connecticut. Would love to get a pic of the two convertibles together before I move to DC as I've never seen another 87-89 GTA vert (other than in pics)

So ASC did not convert any 350 cars (Camaro or Firebird) prior to 1989?

There were 4 Camaros in 1987 that I know of, beyond that Not that I am aware of.

There is a car in FL, that I am trying to get the VIN as the seller states its a 350... I suspect its a 305...

If my research is correct, your car should be an exported car to Canada??? Then imported back to the US?

Re: 1987 Trans Am convertible?

Just looked at the pics of your GTA vert, sweet ride. I just bought a 87 LG4 vert. Couldnt figure out who made it. after looking at your pics, it was done the same way yours was done. 4 seater, the plastics on top of the quarters. does yours have the conversion sticker anywere on your car? i looked in my door jam area and found nothing. scott
