New 'Vert Owner ('88 IROC-Z)

Hello All,

I just picked up a clean '88 IROC-Z convertible and I'm perplexed - help please?

For starters, when I fold the rear portion of the top down to secure it, I can't figure out how to get the post that's situated in the middle of the frame under the rear window to push down far enough through that opening/tube so the the cotter pin will catch the post just above the flange - I can only get the tip of the post almost flush with the bottom of the tube but it's still not far enough.

When I bought the car, the previous owner jury rigged this by using a pair of vise grips to cinch the tip of the post up against the inside of that metal tube such that the top doesn't come up in the back. I've tried everything I can think of including asking another person to apply downward pressure on the bottom part of the top under the rear window in an effort to expose more of the post so the flange clears the slot/opening but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
PJ

Is the catch pin installed in the correct direction? When I got my vert, I was missing a few parts, and had a very difficult time. This thread has great pics, and helped me a great deal:

Fold the front of the top back halfway, push rod down thru hole, I give mine a thwap with my fist ... then fasten latches on windshield above visors. May be difficult but that's the way its done. When its cold out I really have to stretch and pull to get front latches dogged down properly.
Once you get one the other side should pop in.

Yes wasnt much on locking the rear other than putting your hand under and locking it. Is the spring supposed lock the pin when closed?
Forgive me, ive never had seen a complete vert in person to see the latch in action lol most posts ive seen were about putting the top down

The spring clip holds the pin in place. Be sure that you have a spring clip, and that it is facing the correct direction. If the clip is installed backward, it will not hold the pin down. With the spring installed correctly, you should only have to apply a minimal amount of pressure to the rear of the convertible top to make it pop into place. The pics in that thread are great, because they show a car with a complete setup. As I mentioned before, my car was missing a few parts, and I was yanking my hair out trying to get the top to work properly.
