Re: Convertible lid clear protective film replacement

I did mine with clear film used for invisible bras. Just wash lid good get a bottle with warm water with one drop of dish detergent. Spray lid then back of film adjust to where you want it then squeegee out the air bubbles. Its just like installing window tint film. That's what worked on the stuff I used but it should be the same one you bought? Good luck

Re: Convertible lid clear protective film replacement

I scraped it off with a blade, it was peeling bad when I bought the car and had some surface rust so a buddy painted it for me color does not really match but I am going to get the whole car repainted next summer. I just didn't want the rust to turn into cancer.

Re: Convertible lid clear protective film replacement

Thanks for responding! My car is an all original low milage car with its original factory paint. Has been always garaged since I bought it new in 1987. Just the two corners on the protective clear film are damaged, I don't want to damage the original paint. I'm looking for safe methods.. Has anyone tried applying heat slowly to it? Any feed back would be great! Thanks...

3m sells an adhesive remover that body shops use to remove decals? That is safe for paints? 1987 nice that is what I was looking for but they are pretty rare and the ones I did find were out of my price range. Is your a Iroc?

Yes it's an IROC-Z. I'm the original owner, even has its original Goodyear Eagle tires. The only item I had to change was the battery. It has 29k original miles, never seen winters, just an occasional rain. Getting it ready for this summers IROC-Z 30th Anniversary Meet at the GM Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Finally was able to work on the protective film on the rear deck. Was planning on using a heat gun to heat the film, but thought it would be to hard to regulate the heat & possibly damege the paint. Instead I used a hair drier to heat it up slowly. Started in one corner gentenly pulling it off as I heated it. It came off easily with no damage to paint. I allowed the paint to cool overnight per directions. Next day I used the 3M adhesive remover. It worked great on getting all the adhesive off. I also used painters blue tape to cover the black vinyl on the lid. The adhieve remove will damage plastic, vinyl & rubber.. Getting ready to install the new protective film using the decal wet method. Will post results soon.

Re: Convertible lid clear protective film replacement

I would like to know where to get this clear piece. I also have an 87 and am original owner. Mine is in pretty good shape but deck lid needs to be repainted.

So the wet process did not go well. Had a hard time removing the paper backing from the protective clear film once It started to wet it. Vinyl decals have a vinyl backing made to get wet. Got one more try with a 2nd film, will try to remove all the paper first from the paper backing, than apply it wet to lid.
