3rd Gen Wind Deflector

3rd Gen Wind Deflector
I have always wanted a wind deflector ever since I saw them on the 4th gen Camaros (also BMWs, Mercs, Audis, etc). I have now fitted one to my 91 Trans Am Convertible. I can now use the car more comfortably and more often. I can turn on the heater and put the wind deflector in the upright position and enjoy the ride.
Anyway, this is how I managed to make the installation: I carefully measured the width of the car approximately where I wanted the wind deflector mounted. I looked at upmarket cars and took note of where they were mounted. Using the measurements that I took, I found that a BMW 328 would fit nearly perfectly. The only changes that I made to the deflector from the BMW was that I added approximately an inch to each side of the shaft (glued plastic rods over the shafts). I also took off the rear fold-down piece from the wind deflector (not needed). I had a friend on one side of the car and I was on the other side of the car. We each held the deflector in place where I wanted it to be mounted. It is approximately an inch above the speaker grills that I had previously fitted to my car (1 inch speaker grills with a 1/4 inch piece of masonite extension). I marked where I wanted the holes to be. I removed the rear seat bottoms and loosened the side trims panels. I now cut the leather where the holes were to be. Then, I drilled the holes and mounted the rubber grommets. On measuring the location, take into account that you want the horizontal section of the wind deflector to push against the rear seat back to hold it in place. The wind deflector is easy to operate. When it is in place, all you have to do is reach back and lift the section to the vertical position. The rear section will remain in place and provide a covering for the rear seats. I find that there is very little wind coming from the back of my head now. It also means that the car is much more comfortable in more harsh weather conditions. You can turn on the heater and if you like you can lift the windows and enjoy the car more. If you like, the deflector lowers and also if you like you can remove it very easily. To remove, all you have to do is slide the adjustable rod to the inside and remove the wind deflector. I hope this helps for anyone interested in adding this to their car. I have attached pics for explanation.

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
i think what i would like is a redesigned tourno cover that went up to the back of the front seat making it a two seater.

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
I've had a few autoform convertibles. First the two seater convertible autoform limits the seat back reclining and just moving it all the way back. It feels uncomfortable to me, that's why I sold mine. Second they are the worst convertibles as far as sealing and keeping elements out, poor design because of time built. It was a neat looking car and lastly, try and get seals for it...
As far as wind deflectors go, BMW works well I'm using a Mercedes deflector

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
The rods from the deflector simply insert into the rear side panels and that's it? Does the deflector rest on anything beside the rear seat when folded back?
I'm not sure what wind forces are on the deflector when driving in the up position: does it wobble or move around a lot?
Not sure if I saw in your original post, but where did you pick this thing up?
It looks really classy; nice job.

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
Thanks. I had always wanted one and found that this one fit perfectly. I bought it on EBAY from someone who had forgotten to give it to the new buyer of his car. But, you can find one for sure on EBAY. It only mounts in the side panels and pushes against the rear seat back. When you take measurements you can position the holes where you like. When you are moving, the force actually comes from the rear and holds the deflector upright. If you are not using it, you can either take it out or just fold the upright piece down. You will have to remove the rear section of the deflector because you will not need it. I am very pleased with the way it came out and on the road you wouldnt believe the difference it makes for a more comfortable ride. Hope that helps.

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
The guy I bought it from said that it is from BMW 328. It fits very well. The only thing you have to do is remove the end part that fold down. It is a great thing and you can enjoy the car more often. If you dont want it up, then just fold the top part down. Hope that helps. Ron

Re: 3rd Gen Wind Deflector
Okay, 328 is just the Typ (3 stands for bmw 3er series, like our's called camaro, Pontiac and so on.
28 stands for the motor=2.8L)
Their must be another Name like: E30, E36, E46 and so on. That means the model like ours called 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen.
If you have this Information it would be perfect.
Or the building-date of the bmw?
Hope you understand me.
