Trunk rear plastic cover

My 1992 Firebird Convertible is missing the cover that goes at the very rear of the trunk that covers the hatch mechanism. Since it has the slam latch I wasn't sure what the correct piece was that goes there. I have spare t-top ones from pull down coupes, but it doesn't seem right since it has a large square opening and a giant bump for the pull down mechanism. Did they use the panels from early non-pull down cars?

The 2(92s) I have seen (1 being mine) use the big plastic part and the molded fabric on the sides.

Re: Trunk rear plastic cover

they have 2 different size panels, they both look similar, but one has a larger hump in the middle for the hatch mechanism, that is for the electric hatch, the push down hatch is the smaller one, refer to my cars album for a closer look at the push down kind

But which one was used in 1992 Convertibles? Since sometime around 1987 the electric pull down became standard they would have stopped producing the manual hatch ones. I would guess they wouldn't do a run of them for the Verts with their manual latch in late 91 and 92, but I could be wrong.

That is disappointing if they used the same pull down piece as the power pull down models. Seems like a bunch (in terms of Thirdgen trunk space) of wasted space. Is it a hard top or t-top one? Does it have a light? If so, what tripped it turning on/off?

Re: Trunk rear plastic cover

My 89 formula 350 vert has the auto pulldown latch so its standard for all the cars that yr.
My 92 TA vert has a "slam closed decklid" as I call it and it has the standard plastic piece covering it as did the othe late 92 I saw.

Sorry if I am being obtuse, but on the 92 Vert, when you say standard do you mean the standard pull down one or the slam hatch one?

Re: Trunk rear plastic cover

It has the slam closed decklid.
The normal interior plastic panel covers it in the trunk, just like the earlier cars with the auto pulldown.

Re: Trunk rear plastic cover

Yes, the 91-92 'vert uses the same plastic trim panel from the '86-'92 coupes. Only for the piece that covers the latch. They probably could have reverted to the older '82-'85 slam latch slimmer plastic trim panels, but they were no longer in production.

The sides were molded carpeting (unlike the '87-'90 verts which used modified coupe side trim panels).
