Re: 1987 GTA ASC CONVERTIBLE 66,000 MILES

Working on ASC today. Front bumper cover cracked. Pulled it off to repair (original GM) I'm also going to replace the crash bar. It's rusty from florida salt in air...

What are you going to use to repair it? Just curious I would like to repair mine rather than replace as it only has two cracks.

I went to Lincoln Technical for body and collison. I use 3M two stage epoxy. They sell a kit also patches to repair back side. I would do them in school and sell them ready for paint. Front bumper is discontinued by GM for sometime. I repair them because i use OE parts on my cars. I also rebuild headlight motors and power antennas too.

Sweet I worked in a body shop after high school but never worked on plastic bumpers. Is the epoxy sandable or do you need to putty the scratches? Or can you even putty plastic? Thanks for the info

Re: 1987 GTA ASC CONVERTIBLE 66,000 MILES

Well found another difference today while looking at 87...my third brake like is different than 88-89...my is shorter(lens)
and i have no housing like 88-89. My has black ford surround...very odd. It's not covered in back. I guess they figured wing would cover it???? Yeah and it's a FORD part # on lens

Re: 1987 GTA ASC CONVERTIBLE 66,000 MILES

I think they used the Ford Lens for 85-87, then in 1988 they changed the lens... Probably had to do with getting certification.

Re: 1987 GTA ASC CONVERTIBLE 66,000 MILES

When i spoke to guy at ASC he said they used whatever they had and usually ground part # off...they must have forgot to on mine and others I'm guessing. What I took from him was it wasn't a process that was ground in stone...

Just curious where the 2500 comes from? I've read through the thread & the "Special Edition" tag is from an OROC? Why would anyone take a SE tag off an IROC to put in a GTA?
Speculation without proof soon becomes factual.
I'd loveto know facts but first time I've seen the 2500 number thrown around in 6 years & 1st time I've seen an SE plaque on a Bird but also doubt someone would ADD a numbered tag to a car at random.
One thing about ASC not every conversion seems to be identical.

I think this Red 87 GTA vert is an awesome car.
On the J65 Posi. I have an 87 IROC vert with 305tpi/auto that has a disc posi. GM was.putting them in but Chevy vs Pontiac line was a little different.
I also think mine has the factory oil cooler which I found unique too.

As time went on they became more and more standardized. 85-87 it seems to be evolutionary, there was something along the lines of 3 latching mechanisms, as they were attempting to improve the design, even some with a power pull down mechanism in the Firebirds, by the time 1988 rolled around they seemed to have figured out what they (ASC) wanted to do and how to do it. By 1989 the conversions were pretty set in stone year for year, I have not seen a lot of variation from one car to another... However I have not seen a plethora of cars either. It just seems that the power pull down mechanisms were pretty much gone, and little odds and ends that were on earlier cars were gone as well. By the time you get to 90 & 91, things even got more standardized... IT just seems to be what I have observed.

Re: 1987 GTA ASC CONVERTIBLE 66,000 MILES

John
The car I took the motor and switch off of was an 87 firebird that I think was originally a 6???? Someone put a 350 out of a truck in it and added GTA ground effect and wheels. Still has original gauges with the 8 or so round small circles next to tach...very odd
