Does anyone know about these side spoilers here? Flat when ending at the squatter panel with a Little piece that mounts on the door? I've heard from some people it was optional and from others it's an 88 only part. Wondering what the true story is. Thanks in advance

You're pictures are tough to put in perspective. The only door extension pieces came in all 87 ASC cars, all 86 ASC cars & VERY early production 88 ASC cars.

1987 IROC. GM build date 1/87 but not a 6th digit of VIN "3" car. 6th digit is a "2", which is a "special edition". Was sent off to ASC through a dealer to be converted & this is what ASC was doing with the early cars.

I thought all convertibles had them though they may have changed from Year to year. My 91 does but they look slightly different from the pics posted.

My '87 is a sixth digit 3 car and I don't have those taillight fins. Mine has the small middle taillight which I have heard are the earlier versions, but it's hard tellin with ASC. It also has the 20th Anniversary Commemory Edition dash pouch also. 5.0L, TPI, 5 speed car.

A friend had those door pieces on his 88 Camaro but I'm unsure of the build date.

If I had to guess, I'd say the pieces by the tail lights were their solution to covering the holes in the quarter panels for the regular lip spoiler. Cheaper and easier than welding the holes and painting the car.

I'm only going to refer to VIN 3 cars. Spoiler door extensions were for the 1987 model year only, BUT ASC still had some stock left after the model year run, so they used them for 1988 convertibles until they ran out.

Since I've had mine since 88 I agree. ASC factory cars. My vin has a funny 9th digit that isn't in the decodes that I have found and that letter is "X" and I am kinda assuming that meant send this car, before the top is assembled on it, to ASC for conversion and the 87's like mine all had the door extensions. My wifes doctor drove a 88 vert and it didn't have them on it. Just MTC.

The 9th digit is a check digit... it is not hard to calculate, but without a computer it takes a min or two. Check digits can be any number from 1 thru 9 and they can be a 0 (zero) or an X. More or less you give weight to each digit position within the VIN and each letter is given a numerical value, for example an A is worth 1, a B is 2, but a J is also worth 1, Some letters are not used like the Letter I, O or Q. Each position in the VIN has a value, and then you multiply the value of the number and the position value, then You add all of your calculations together then divide them by 11. If you have a remainder of 10 then that is an X, a remainder of 1 is 1, a 2 is 2 etc...

Well there is more than just that. There are 4 different tops
85-88
89
90-91
92

The later 89-92 are wider in the rear than the 85-88
The trunk pieces changed mid 1991 to just carpet, ( all 91-92 Firebirds got the carpet AFAIK) but the Camaro started with the plastic pieces then went to the carpet mid year, around Aug of 1990 or so I think.

I can't be certain of this but because I currently have an 87 Convertible thats about to get a new top and I just recently sold an 88 convertible that I did put a new top on, I have done a good deal of research on this fact that there are 3 different size tops. It is my understanding that ALL 87 are the same size and that would be the 50 inch wide version. Then sometime during the middle of 88 production the widened them to 51 inches. So 88 is the one year that can be confusing because it could be 50 or 51. After 88 they were all 51 but they simply changed the size of the window and added an interior headliner in 91 I believe but don't quote me on that one.

Yep those are the quarter panel cover trim extensions that all 87's came with and the early 88's. Then they were never used again. IMPORTANT NOTE: the long trim pieces that go on top of the quarters that would meet up with these little "spears" are different on the sets that have the spears vs the sets that didn't. The sets that came with the spears are more squared off and those that didn't are more rounded. I have a couple sets of each. Also note, these quarter trim cap pieces getting dry and brittle over the years and get spider cracks in them. Don't just fill those cracks and sand them and then paint your car. The cracks WILL come back right thru your brand new paint. Yep, learned that the hard way

I want to think it was an 86-87 offering, and the early early cars in 88 might have had them until they ran out of them...

They would be kind of difficult to 3D Print. They would have to be made from ABS. It would be easier to make molds from them and then duplicate them with fiberglass like the originals.
