Front of the intake manifold, near the water outlet, under the throttle body.
Look for a thing with 2 wires, a yellow and a black. That's it.
The sensor doesn't go bad so often, but the connector and wiring does develop problems. Check that over carefully, if it has issues then you can replace the sensor as much as you want, but still get codes.

Can anyone tell me where the temp sensor is located that controls the temp gauge ?? , I replaced the temp sensor for the ECU but my guage does not work, I see the wire disconnected ( car has an aftermarket temp gauge I want to get rid of ) But cant find the sensor to hook up the wire to ? There is a plug in the top of the water pump, is this where that sensor is supposed
to be mounted ??
Thanks in advance for the help and advice

Temp sender for the gauge is located between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. If there is an aftermarket gauge in your car, you will need to remove it and put in a factory replacment sender.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but I have a related question. What does the sensor and the wire going to it that control the temp gauge look like? Anyone have a pic of one or both so I can try to track down the wire? I'm reinstalling my engine and can't find the darn sending unit or wire..

If you goto the number one spark plug, feel back about 2 or 3 inches. Its round and feels like a bolt, if the plug is off. Or you can stick a mirror(steal your girlfriends or moms make up mirror) under the exhaust manifold and see it quite easily. Its has a round brass plug on the end. I would like a picture of the plug, and the wiring harness it runs to, if anyone has that. I think mine may be cut off.

Re: location of coolant temperature sensor on l98 1988 irocz
The plastic wire end on my original coolant temp sensor broke so I replaced it with a new sensor and wiring but it still doesn't work. I'm wondering if it's the wrong sensor to begin with. It's the one with the flat clip on the end rather than the other temp sensors that are double wired and look a little more "high tech". Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Thanks!

This is the one that feeds the guage: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...S_575658306___
Dark Green wire to it. Maybe your guage is bad or there is a break in the dark green wire?

That's the one I replaced, with that same one. I noticed yesterday that the wires are a little 'charred' so maybe you're right and the wiring itself is bad.
If the gauge jumps to the top when I turn the key, is that an indicator that the gauge is ok?

Yeah, means the guage is moving - sounds like a bad wire.

Hi there, I was reading your thread on the temp sending unit and I just bought the part you showed the link for, but I can't find it on the engine. I located one similar but the wire connection is not the same type. I think it's the O2 sensor? Exactly where is the sensor located? I hope this will fix my guage. Thanks!

It's on the drivers side under the umber one spark plug under a shield. Kinda hard to get to like everything else on this beast.

Ok great. What does the connection look like? I went to NAPA and they gave me the part (#TS6641), but it has a flat connector. I will check again tonight and see if I am just looking too low on the engine. I think the one I located was on the block below the plugs. Could this be to O2 sensor I am looking at. Maybe I will try and shoot you a picture of the part I have or post one like you did here. Thanks again.

It's a single green wire.

Re: location of coolant temperature sensor on l98 1988 irocz
Ok, I just looked and found it, but the part I got from NAPA does not match. The new one has a different connection (see picture) I also took a picture of the one I located next to the #1 plug right where you indicate. Notice the difference in connections. The one I located does have the green wire however.

The unfortunate fact is, I don't know of any oem styles enders available. The new just uses a standard female spade connector.

O2 sensor is in the exhaust system. Maybe a knock sensor. Does it have a round plug?

That sender is for an older SBC.

I found the O2 sensor on exhaust so that's not it. I believe the OEM connection is different from the one I just got at NAPA. They may have sold me the wrong one. Thanks`

Your existing connector goes RIGHT ONTO that other sensor... perfect.... wouldn't ever know it's not the "right" one.

Really? Ok I will see if you are right. They just look so different and I just could not see how the connection would work. Thanks

Re: location of coolant temperature sensor on l98 1988 irocz
Hey guys, this is my first post but it perfectly matches the previous ones.
I live in Germany and proudly own a 87 IROC-Z since Dec 14. It is not on the road yet - few things to do first.
One is the temp-sending unit mentioned here. My gauge also is not moving when the engine gets warmer - but the indicator does tip the top of the gauge if I turn the key to ASSY (but just then - NOT permanently while engine is running!).
I checked the wire from connector C100 (just from the inside underneath the steering wheel) to the sensor and it should be fine (at least no open). Because the gauge is moving by turning the key to ASSY (just like suhz88 said) I think it might be the sensor itself.
Well checking on the Internet I can find different ones. My Problem is: I know that the current one would be the sensor TS66T because it just looks like that. But I cannot be sure if that was the original one or if someone already replaced it with a false one and this is why it does not work. The TS76T is slightly different in the housing - maybe it has a different operating range...
Does anyone know which sensor-number fits which model-year/engine...?
Thank you!!!

Re: location of coolant temperature sensor on l98 1988 irocz
Electrically they're all the same. Same resistance, same curve from cold to hot, same same same same.
As far as I know, ALL GM temp gauges from the mid 50s (when they switched from 6V to 12V) are the same electrically. Only differences are the size of the pipe fitting they screw into (1/2" pipe before around 1980, 3/8" pipe after that) and whether they had the "mushroom" connector or the standard slide terminal. (which the connector on the car will fit either connector on the sending unit)
