240-260 temp

I have a 86 iroc, 305 tpi 117k original, when the engine is turning 3500-4500 rpms my temp will climb from 200 to 240-260 alost going in red. Normal driving she runs around 200-220 .I have a 180 thermo and I just ordered a 3row radiator. Any ideas why this could be happening?? Or what else could remedy this?? Any help is appreciated.

Re: 240-260 temp

What is the fan doing at these times. And why are you revving your engine so high when you're sitting still ?

Re: 240-260 temp

Does the thermostat open? Even new thermostats can be faulty. If it doesnīt open the coolant does not run through the radiator rendering the radiator useless.

Does your fan start when the coolant reaches +/- 240? (I think it starts at 236°F?) When sitting still the fan has to deal with cooling.

Generally when the engine is running the car does not sit still for long periods, which means the airdam helps which it doesnīt do in your situation. Letīs assume itīs there. Does the engine cool down when you start rolling?

Re: 240-260 temp

yes, once I start driving it cools down to about 200-210. When i power brake it / do a brake stand and the engine turns hih revs it rapidly climbs to the red. My fan comes on and is on at the time she climbs. new thermo ( 180 ) yes it opens. Under normal driving it runs 200-230. Just confused as to why its runninmg so hot when I lay some rubber

Re: 240-260 temp

Probably because your not getting any air over your radiator while your motor is working harder, thats usually how it works.

your radiator can't cool down coolant if there isn't any airflow, so seeing temps go up would be normal. fans can only do so much

Re: 240-260 temp

If you want to do stuff like that more often or expec many traffic jams during summer I can only advise to look for a fan+shroud combination.

Something like the product below:
http://www.maradynehp.com/products/mach/

Should help better then a 3 core radiator. The 3 core does not change the 3rdgen design flaw (no shroud on single fan camaros/firebirds).

I heard some people had similar rates of succes using a ford taurus (unsure as to what model year) fan&shroud combo.

Re: 240-260 temp

how long does it take for your temp to go from normal
to over 240-260?-if the rise is very rapid, say less than
1 min.,engine might be trying to get into detonation
while doing the burnout-that will cause a very rapid
rise in temp(and is bad on the engine)Even with an
electric fan,you should still have a couple min.before
the temp gets out of hand.If no detonation, the original
radiator might be internally dirty with scale and scum
and ineffective-see what happens with the new 3-core
rad.A fan upgrade could be tried too.

With this abuse you are wondering why the car is running hot.

Ive only done it a few times, tires were dry rotted so before i replaced them i wasted them. On a hot day it will run around 220 on highway and 240 in city. The fan does come on, comes on high tho around 230. I did look at the link you sent ( ty btw ) which one would you recommend? i currently have a single fan set up which is controlled by the ecm.

Re: 240-260 temp

Personally Iīd go for the basic MM22 model.
I purchased a product from a different manufacturer. If I were able to return that product I would and pick up this one instead.

The one I picked up has a max airflow of 4000CFM which is too much and required fitting a higher performing alternator as well as swapping the 20A fuse for a 30A one.
I might try to sell through ebay and get one of these instead. Any fan displacing more then 2000CFM will get the job done if your engine runs fine.

Therefor I would advise to 8t2 z-chevīs comment about detonation some consideration as well.
I cleaned my stock radiator and had the car running over summer last year with a 1400CFM single shroudless fan. Worked fine as long as I kept rolling but temperature raised rather quickly when sitting still. A gunked up radiator does not do you any favors but you mentioned already cleaning it, right?

Stock fan in single fan applications only comes on at 236°F when using stock temp. feeler. Since the engines operating temperature is 190° there is no use in actually having your fan come on anywhere before 210° because otherwise your thermostat will continuously be half open. When using stock thermostat best have the fans come on at or slightly after 210°. If you want to have the engine run cooler, there will be a lot to reconsider.
