Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
Have the stock single fan in my car now with no shroud. On hot days it goes up to 230 and wont go down. Have to pull over and shut it off. Yes fan comes on (wired to toggle switch) and air dam in place. Engine is far from stock so I got a 160 degree thermostat and champion 3 row radiator. Still runs to hot????
Been to local yards to get a LT or LS dual fan setup and no luck. Read the Taurus fan swap is a good one but I've read several posts with mixed results on what year exactly is the one to get? Seen some v8 tbird fans that have straight blades. Are they any as good?

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
The Taurus fan you want is from the mid 90s 3.8; 94 or thereabouts.
A Xler minivan unit also moves A BUNCH of air. And there are very few cars more plentiful in the buzzard nests, than THOSE.
For that matter, a WHOLE BRAND NEW one, shroud and all, is less than $100. Hardly makes sense to try to pry the buzzards off of their carrion for that little change.

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
xler minivan? What is that?
During my search and I read that the new fans have chinese motors and are not as powerful as the factory ones. Hate to spend more and get less.
Heard late 80's early 90's tauras alot on other sites. Oldest one I've seen was a 97. Left it because I was unsure if it put out.
Be nice to know EXACTLY what year and model taurus, lincoln mark VIII, tbird, xler minivan, etc..... that has a good fan and how they stack up against each other. Would be a good sticky thread right there with the champion 3 row radiator.

"xler";Chrysler-soccer mom vans.i have noticed ~early 2000s jeep Cherokees with standard cooling systems have a decently large electric fan(clutch fan used on the H/D cooling on those).1990-95 3.8L v6 is the usual Taurus fan swapped in-IIRC,there is some wiring differences for some years of Taurus fans in that year spead.I have heard the aftermarket stock replacement fans often vibrate from out of balance fan blades. No doubt hard to find today, but 82-85 GM 4,3L diesel(cutlass ciera etc.)had a really powerful 16.5"electric fan:same dia, as a 3.8 Taurus fan and at least as powerful.Like a Taurus 3.8 fan, requires special H/D wiring and relays.

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
ok thanks guys. That's some good info to have on my next trip to the yard. Any other advice/alternatives would be great too. Like that lincoln mark VIII fan that's supposedly 4500cfm. Read on a jeep forum that the 90's thunderbird fans and tauras fans are about the same. For now I am after the 90-95 taurus fan because the other ford junk is questionable on fit and performance on our thirdgens.

You cant run a Taurus fan on stock wiring. It will fry.
Any fan that pulls amperage like that needs special wiring to handle it.
That means at the very least heaver wire and relay.
formula1LE makes a special harness and high amp fans with harness.
One great reason I see in using one of his fans/circuit wiring , etc. is "reliability
and the quality you get.
The man knows what he's doing and is truly a professional.
Most likely he will respond to this thread but if not just click on his user name above and send him a PM.

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
Got to the yard today and found nothing I was hoping to find. Go figure. But I did find this fan from a 94' tempo. Looked similar to a Taurus fan so I snatched it for $10.00. Installed it today also. A couple hours trimming and figuring a way to mount it. It fits pretty good. Wired it on low speed because wiring isn't ready for high amps yet. It diffidently moves more air than the stocker even on low speed. If I put the high speed wire on the batt. post. WOW. Cant wait to test drive and see if it does the trick. Ill post the results when I do.

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
sure looks like a Taurus fan-same motor and blade for surenice price too!.If voltage drops low at idle with that fan on high, might need to upgrade to a CS144 alternator

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
Yeah the late 80's to mind 90's 3.8L V6 Taurus and tempo are the good ones. The tempo uses the same motor but has a slightly smaller fan blade dia. and smaller shroud.
A quick way to check is just the S curved blades and 3 heavy gauge wires.. If it has that and came from a Ford it's the one you want.
The one you picked up is a good one.

Re: Junkyard cooling fan (which one)
I know its been over a month but someone might want to know how well it performs. I drove the car and with the fan on it stays at 160 degrees. I turned fan off and let it get up to 210 to see how it cooled it back down. Took about 10-15 minutes to go back to 160. Keep in mind this is low speed and I have a Champion 3 row radiator.
