Help with 4th gen fans+shroud on 88 GTA
Hey everyone,
I've been reading through threads about adding 4th gen fans to our cars, but there are still a few points that aren't elaborated on.
I bought a fan+shroud assembly locally off a 99 Camaro and I have a few questions, plus I have an LT1 radiator installed already.
1. Will the factory upper radiator support/shroud work? Or do I need to buy a 4th gen upper radiator support/shroud?
2. Is there any other modifications that I need for fitment?
I see some people saying it fits like its supposed to be there and others claiming they needed to add tabs or radiator straps.
Any clarification or pictures would be great.

I'll be doing it once I'm off work. The mounting of the original dual fans on the upper radiator shroud made it look like it wouldn't fit the LS1 setup.
I'll give it a shot and update, just figured I'd start a thread to get some visibility.

Re: Help with 4th gen fans+shroud on 88 GTA
Sooo.......I did this just the other night. In fact, it's not 100% done. First, FYI, I'm using a 4th gen shroud with fans, stock replacment radiator, and stock upper support shroud from my 89 Iroc. Might be a little different than your bird.
I found that before doing anything, and without the upper support shroud, the 4th gen set up actually fit pretty darn well. The passenger side lines up darn near perfect, and in doing so, this leaves about an inch of radiator exposed on the driver side. If the shroud was wider though, it'd hit the steering box, so this was just fine. At this point, the only thing I needed to do was to trim a few pieces of plastic off the shroud. Once I did this, it fit nice and snug up to the radiator, and it sat down in the groove on the lower radiator support. Again, darn near perfect.
The upper support shroud from my 89 however, wouldn't come close to fitting. Wouldn't be hard to fab something, but knowing it wouldn't be used, I wasn't afraid to cut it up in an attempt to make it work. ...and while I did cut quite a bit, it now fits perfectly, I retained the upper radiator hose support that's molded into it, AND...with the Iroc airbox, you can't see what I had to cut. I don't think that would be the case with the firebird box though.
Once done, it fit darn near perfect, and looks totally stock. Now, I will have to go back and fab up some aluminum bracket/straps to secure it, but that should be pretty easy. The factory set up all bolted together and held itself in place. As I have it now, it does FIT almost perfectly, but it has no support. it'll need securing.
Anyhow...I have a few pics. I was going to make a full write up once I'm finished.

Awesome, thanks for the information & pictures.
I just completed mine, granted I cut off more than I wanted to on the stock upper support shroud.. but you can't really see that I did unless you remove it.
The only other issue I came across was the mounting point for the MAF, I had to cut a bit off the top of the actual fan shroud for it to fit, but the MAF itself covers the small bit I cut out (I'll probably put some type of foam or something there down the road, but honestly I'm sure its fine).
To help with support/securing it, you can go buy some of those Radiator "zip ties" that they sell. I bought this: http://www.autozone.com/heating-and-...?checkfit=true
I just put 3 on the top & 1 on the bottom since the bottom was held in fairly well.

Those fans also wire in series through relays for low/high speed so keep that in mind too. They can be run one and one but that defeats the purpose of them.
