Knock Filter EBL

I did read the article on the website about the knock filter for the ebl but didn't fully understand it. My car doesn't have an external knock filter like some cars do with the esc module attached to the harness. I haven't put my memcal back into the ecm yet either. Without it not being in the ecm will my cars knock sensor still function correctly?

Re: Knock Filter EBL

If your '85 came factory stock with TPI then there should be a knock filter. It will look like the external one shown on the EBL P4 install page (last image IIRC).

Check ECM pin B7, that is the ESC input to the ECM. If there is a wire there then there should also be a knock filter. Check behind the relays that are next to the brake booster.

The other thing to check is the vertical knock gauge on the main WUD screen. If there is not a knock filter the gauge will continuously count up knock counts.

The car came stock with tpi, but was converted to the 90 speed density set up. There is no longer an external esc module on the harness. I'll check the screen on the WUD

Re: Knock Filter EBL

Ah, you have the EBL P4 Flash system. In this case the knock gauge won't count up due to no filter. So no need to check that.

If you still have the OEM knock sensor and filter they can be used with the EBL P4 ECM.

Otherwise the best way to go is to use a pluggable filter (fits completely inside of case).

If you have a MEMCAL with the filter can also use that. Needs to be plugged into the EBL P4 Flash board (under the MEMCAL cover). Then spacers and longer screws used for the cover as the MEMCAL protrudes by about 1/2".
