Transmission for 350 swap

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum, but am on it a lot researching things for my Camaro. Lots of info on here!

Not sure if this is a re-thread or not, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding this/figuring out the proper solution...

So I have a 1984 Camaro Z28 with a 350 swap (brand new 350). Just picked it up a few weeks back, so I'm still learning a few things about it. What I'm stuck on is the transmission and what I should be running, as I have found out it has the NWC 5 speed manual T5, and from what I'm finding, those are weak trannys for the 350. So I've been looking at finding a more suitable 5 speed tranny. Now from what I've read, the WC T5 will work just fine, but I can't quite find many that will work with the camaro application. I keep finding the WC Mustang T5's in the late 80's - end of 90's. I noticed some people do the T56 swap, but I'm running a bit low on funds and don't think I can make that conversion to a 6 speed happen.
Is there a way (and what is the right way) to use the Mustang WC T5, or what would be a better option to use for a 5 speed tranny to direct bolt up to a 350 that wouldn't kill the wallet?

Thanks!!

Re: Transmission for 350 swap

Shane, welcome to TGO. I moved your thread to the transmission board here. Note that the f-body's did get the WC T5, although I am not sure which year. Can tell by the front counter-shaft bearing if it is a WC or non-WC.

RBob.

Re: Transmission for 350 swap

1988 started the world class T5 in the v8 third gens. They are out there for sure. I have sold 2 in the past 8 mo. and have another one I need to test out.
88-92 v8 camaro/firebird will be a world class.

But truth be told, don't get too hung up on nwc vs wc. Both are going to break behind a stout built sbc with sticky tires. The factory rating on the non-world-class transmissions are rated for 265 ft-lbs, where the world-class transmissions are rated at 300 ft-lbs

Not that big of difference in rated power handling.

Re: Transmission for 350 swap

Thanks for the info Night rider. I was getting a little worried about it, but it was running just fine with the NWC T5. Just wanted to play it safe! I will continue to run the NWC until I build up the power more.

Thanks!
