VATS bypass install

I am planning on buying a VATS Bypass Module from madvet.com , My question is where will I plug this in and what tools do I need to do it. My car is now in the shop where they confirmed my suspicions and told me they wanted to replace the VATS system with a new one. I would like to just disable the whole thing and not have the problem again. If anyone has done this or knows how to, please tell me how hard it is to install the VATS Bypass Module. Thank you

Well, I'm not familiar with that bypass module or sure how much it is. Precisely what did that shop say was wrong with your VATS and about what are they wanting to charge you for replacing it? I replaced my ignition lock cylinder and key for about $75.00 and about an hours work taking my time.

VATS module is more than that with labor, about $700 for total job. Sounds like they are just going to replace the ign cylinder like Trickster said. One thing to keep in mind with VATS equipped vehicles, insurance companies generally discount VATS equipped vehicles. If you have theft and it is stolen with the anti-theft feature disabled they may delay or refuse payment. Happened with a friends vette, he went through hell when it was lifted and recovered. I took a look at that item, it will plug in at the steering column and it will only replace the ign cyl contacts, they want a key code. It will NOT replace an actual defective module, to do that you need an oscillator to generate a square wave at approx 55hz.

it doesnt bypass the vats.

it does the same thing as what happens when you put the key in... its like having that lil pellet resistor thats on the key connected all the time.

if you truly have a VATS problem, this wont solve it. not to mention, i get 10 of thoes resistors for twenty five cents.

i reccomend you DONT bypass vats and just figure out whats wrong with your car and fix it. do it yourself if you dont have the $. most likley its just the contacts that touch the key anyway.

VATS works.

without it, anyone can do this to your column in 10seconds and drive away with your car.

Don't Let Your 1986-89 VATS System Leave You Stranded!

The VATS System has kept many thieves from stealing 1986-89 Corvettes, but it has also stranded a lot of owners if/or when it becomes inoperable! Bypass your VATS to enable a sure start, avoid expensive towing and elude repair costs. Also allows use of copied "spare" keys! Specify ignition key code, 1 to 15. Any GM dealer can access this code from your key. Need help? Call our Technical Department!

Ensures an accurate start every time
Simple, no-splice installation
Hides neatly under dash
Remove to reactivate VATS.

As you can see from reading this advertisement, it is not intended to bypass the VATS. It is only intended to be used as a tool to allow you to start your car in the event that your VATS key fails to start your car and then removed after the problem is fixed. As MrDude_1 says, the resistors are cheap, Like MrDude_1, I prefer to make it as hard as possible for my car to ride off into the sunset without me behind the wheel.

Your problem is likely a broken wire on the ignition lock cylinder, worn contacts in the ignition lock cylinder, or a worn key. It is a relatively simple job to replace the lock cylinder. You can check the ignition lock cylinder with this simple test.

The first step is to check the resistance of the chip in the key with a multimeter. Write this value down, you ll be needing it later. Next, remove the panel under the dash and look for a pair of yellow or white wires coming from the steering column and leading to a connector a short distance away. Unplug the connector and with the key in the ignition, measure the resistance at the wires leading from the steering column. The reading should match that of the chip in your key. While the reading might match while the key is in the off position, it will probably change when the key is turned forward. If this happens, the problem is in the ignition cylinder or the wires leading to it. At this point, there are two options: replace the cylinder and key or try to repair the wires.

The Trickster!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for your help, I ended up telling my mechanic to install a new cylinder and realy like he wanted, but he instead "professionally disabled" it and saved me a lot of money Like I told him in the first place and he was hesitant. Anyway, thank you all for your help.

Ok Trickster, question, I have a VATS problem now, new cylinder, new key, the ohms reading is the same in key and in wires underneath column at all times, but security light doesn't go off and car won't start. I was able to bypass the starter relay by grounding it, but I need to find the relay for the fuel system or find a way to bypass the vats, because I'm selling my beast and I need it to start. It was working fine last week, it just quit working. Thanks for the help.

$158.00 for a new Vats module and $50.00 for installing at Team Chevrolet in Pasadena, CA. I have done 3 of them myself and currently installing a new module on a 4th gen Camaro. They are a pain when they go out on you unless you know what to do you are stuck! Stranded! Tow truck needed. But the average car theif will not know how to bypass a vats so if you live or park your car in a high crime rate area your insurance company will give you a break if your car has a vats.

What leads you to believe the VATS module is bad?
