Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

Has anybody used the headlight conversion harness for upgrading their headlights to H4 bulbs? I had my GTA next to my cousin's Supra with HID headlight conversion and the stock headlights look like pure crap in comparison, and are so much dimmer than his headlights at night. I was thinking of just doing the H4 conversion and also ordered the Painless Wiring harness to upgrade the factory wiring.

Now I suck at electrical work, so I thought I'd ask. It says in the instructions to hook the positive lead of the harness up to the battery. The positibe lead comes with this circle looking connector (not sure what they're called) that looks like it gets connected by a screw or bolt. I looked under my hood and couln't find anything remotely close to the battery. The closest I could find was the battery to alternator wire which has the same type of connection off the alternator. I really don't want to cut up my harness, so is it OK to run the power wire from this terminal? Isn't this the wire used to charge the battery? If anybody has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. I am a real noob when it comes to electronics. Thanks!

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

If you're going HID, I wouldn't worry about the wiring. The ballasts adjust from the input power to a constant output. I have these on my plow truck, and they don't dim when I lift the plow. If you do use this you could either hook in on that alternator spot, or you could get an extender stud for the battery. They make a bolt to replace the one you have, and gives you a stud sticking out to pile on whatever.

Awesome. Thanks a lot! I didn't know about the battery extender. I won't be going HIDs. Too expensive for me. I just went with Halogen housings and will run Sylvania Silverstar H4 bulbs on the GTA. I have the same bulbs on my daily driver and am happy with them.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

Can I ask where you got the Halogen housings from? Can you give a part number or a link please? Were these a direct replacement fit or was any custom work involved?

Thanks.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

I originally had housings from Pilot that didn't need any mods to the car. I now have a set I got off ebay that are deeper and needed some trimming of the buckets behind the housings, but it wasn't hard. I got the housings from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/82-92...mZ300230241432 and the HID's from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/H4-H7...6997QQtcZphoto I have yet to get any bad HID's from these guys after a few kits. With the double beam bulbs, you really only get HID low beams. They do offer HID high and low kits, but the one I got wasn't worth the extra money for HID high beams.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

You'd need 2 housings to replace your h6054 ones, and an HID conversion kit for H4 or 9003 bulbs. Standard housings are: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/82-90...mZ300224389266 and halo housings are: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/83-84...mZ300227258290

If you want, I know a spot by me that sells HIDs for $99 with a 1 year waranty. Let me know. Im thinking about asking for a group buy from the retailer.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

I might go for that if they have an H4 3000k kit. I've used 6000k bulbs in my plow during the winter, and both driving and plowing snow gets a little blinding with that white/blue light reflecting back at me.

Size: 19.0 KBThat's more personal preference. I'd say get the halo housings just for the ability to do this, even if you hardly ever use it.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

I'd say most housings require you to trim the headlight buckets some, but that's thin metal that can be cut with just about anything. Installation is pretty simple. The stock connector is plugged into an adapter that goes to the ballast. Then wires go from that ballast to the new bulb. On the kits you're looking for H4 or 9003 bulb type, they're both the same. Color wise 5000-6000k is white/blue, 8000k is bluish, 10000k is deep blue, and higher is purple. 5000-6000k will be the brightest they say around 3x as bright as standard, and 10000k is around 2.5x brighter than standard.

Re: Painless H4 headlight conversion harness

just so you know, the HIDs draw 35w but only after they are lit. on initial start up, they actually draw a bit more power than a standard 55w halogen bulb. after they "warm up", then they only draw 35w.

i have the Painless H4 conversion harness. it's worth the investment to protect your factory harness- think of it as insurance against having to rip apart your car when the factory harness burns up and needs re-wiring. the Painless harness truly is painless.

it's basically just one wire to the (+) battery terminal and one wire to the (-) terminal. then plug in one factory headlight connector (you'll see a receptacle for it). then, just plug in the 2 new headlight connectors from the harness to the headlights. the hardest part is finding a place to mount the 2 relays and running all the wiring nicely. the Painless harness can handle halogen bulbs up to 150w. the harness comes with full instructions.

so easy, a caveman could do it.
