How to remove terminals from the bulk connector at the firewall

Ok, So the main power wires from my starter to my fuseblock are hacked up, idk why but they are. I want to replace them from the firewall connector to the starter, I figure it would be better to remove the terminals from the underhood side of the connector and just swap in new wires, instead of splicing the wire at the connector. However I am having a heck of a time getting the terminal out, I tried using tweezers to push the tabs together so i could pull the wire out but am having no luck. I googled and found something about a special tool to remove it, but can not find one at any of the local shops. so any advice on how to get a terminal out? thanks.

The special tool you refer to is available in a set from Snap On tools. There are a a few general types of terminals common to GM harnesses. As I remember, the bulhead connector uses terminals with a lock tab on each side. The release tool for this terminal has two flat pins parallel to one another you release the locks by inserting the tool so that one pin goes to each side of the terminal to unlock the two tabs.
The factory service manual gives detailed instructions for this.

I wish I was better at posting photos, I would take a picture of one of the tools I have. I have basically every special terminal tool made. Snap On offers two different multi tools, each of which has release tools for several common terminals. If you see a Snap On truck in your travels, follow them to their next stop and ask the dealer for "terminal release tools".

The two snap on multi tools I have are one green, one red. Each is hexagonal with a release tool on each of the six sides. Very handy.

Snap on dealers vary in the stock they keep on hand. My dealer keeps his truck full to the rafters cause he deals with alot of old timers like me who already have all the basics. When we need something, its generally weird. LOL. These multi tools are pretty common stuff. I expect that most dealers would keep these on the truck.

Wow, just looked at snap on's website. So they're selling tools online now. Another way to screw their dealers out of a living. That's progress for ya.
