Rear trunk latch won't pull hatch down.
Alright the motor latch is stuck in the up position and when you bring the hatch down it latches, but will not pull the hatch down make it line up with the rear.
Also the third tail light is not receiving power from the (I don't know what its called) contact thing next to the latch.
Please help I was pulled over for the tail light not working and I can't drive it in wet weather.

possible the motor died, or the plastic gear stripped out. both common in these cars.

I've actually fixed it. Took motor apart. Frayed wire on for the armature brush. Soldered back together and it works like a charm.

Did you have to replace the motor? Where do you buy this motor for an 87 TA? ( new not used)
Thanks

Re: Rear trunk latch won't pull hatch down.
My car is a 1990 RS. I have an issue with the hatch not pulling down as well. It always worked like a charm until this year when I opened it to put the t tops in back and then it wouldn't close. I have power to the pull down motor. All of my fuses are good as I just checked them. What I was thinking might be the problem is the mechanism on the hatch itself that comes down and contacts the aluminum to get the motor to do its thing. Does anyone know how this works exactly? I checked the power to the "switch" below the third brake light on the actual hatch and there was none. Where does the power come from to get to that area? I thought initially it was a motor issue but that has been changed and to no avail. I would appreciate any help.

When you say you replaced the motor we assume ONLY the motor, not the entire mechanism.
It that’s true take a look at the these items in the unit.
One is moved when the hook presses on it.
The other one is a spring powered nylon block that slides up and down which centers the hatch hook.
It rotates as the motor operates.
Make sure both function.
The nylon block can fall out.
