Lighting problem

Hi, I have a 92 RS with the 5.0 TBI engine.

Recently, when I go to turn on my headlights none of my gauge lights work and the backlight for the radio is completely black instead of only dimming like it should. I'm edging towards it just being a fuse problem. If it is, what fuse would that be? Or if it's something else, what could it be?

Thanks in advance!

For sure check the "inst lps" 5 amp fuse in the fuse panel under the dash . If blown , and blows again when replaced with another 5 amp fuse try unplugging the radio before trying it again .

The radio going dark is not normal , especially when you figure that no power to the instrument lamps should mean no power to the radio's display dimmer circuit . So why would it do anything if getting no power ? Shouldn't it just stay at normal daytime brightness since nothing is "telling" it to dim ?

Good Luck with it and report back with your findings

Fuse Ruse

Your fuses appear OK.

You most likely have a Headlight Switch problem.

To verify use a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) to probe the orange wire at the switch.

Is there power there?

If yes probe the
brown wire on the switch when the switch is in the on position.

Is there power there?

Happy Racing !

Re: Lighting problem

ok so i probed the harness to the remote dimmer and got about 30.0 ohms on a 200 scale and when i connected to the remote dimmer itself on all 3 prongs it was infinite like no reading and tried different scales and got the same reading so whats the sounds like to you?

I've had the dome light problem before but in my Camaro. If you also noticed, your door locks and cigarette lighter doesn't work too (that's if the firebird is set up the same). There should be a 20 amp fuse that ties all 3 of those in together. Idk about your motors on the other hand because idk if the Firebirds are set up the same

Is this remote dimmer you speak of only for Firebirds or for both? If so where did you say it was? Maybe that is my problem also

92formulalukain, i'm now desprite and back to what you said about the fuseable links near the starter. how often do these burn out? and were you having this problem when you replaced yours with the heavy gauge wire and big car audio amp fuse?
