54v at brown sensing/exciter wire (3 wire alternator)
So I've read all the forums I can get my hands on and I can't find what the the voltage should read with the key on at the brown exciter wire on a 3 wire alternator. Mine is reading 54v with key on I feel that's ridiculously high. Does anyone know what it should actually be reading and why it's so high?

i dont think you should be able to get 54v to that wire from a 12v battery ... i would test the meter ... but i could be wrong, it could have an inverter in there somewhere

I'll post a pic when I get back to the house just in case but I do believe I'm reading it correctly.

Re: 54v at brown sensing/exciter wire (3 wire alternator)
The P.O. was nice enough to butcher the old wiring so I've been replacing connectors and old wiring left and right. Finally just bypassed the sensing wire with a direct connect to the battery connector with an inline fuse only to get a click no crank. So I'm about wiring a temporary push start until I can figure out what all they've destroyed going to the starter.

if you got a click it does not sound like you need to wire a button to it ... but a hot wire to the "excite post" on the alt can drain the battery when not running ... also, to the starter you should have only 2 wires for cranking it (red from the battery to the large post and a purple one to the small post) and 3 other wires going to the large post with the fuseable links to power everything else (on my gta it is 3 wires using 2 connectors)

Re: 54v at brown sensing/exciter wire (3 wire alternator)
Just a temporary fix until I can afford to have it rewired completely I've just been unplugging the pig tail when it's going to be sitting for a long period of time. I suspect when I pull the starter I'll find the source of the gremlin. I know I've seen a thick purple wire cut and spliced into the coolant sensor which I thought was supposed to run to the starter I'll have to pull it to be sure there's not a different purple down there. Any suggestions on what to check on a click no crank besides the starter motor and wiring?

low power from the battery or bad connections or bad /missing ground from head to body what year and is it tpi? ... on my 87 tpi the purple wire runs in a loom on the passenger side right by the intake

Re: 54v at brown sensing/exciter wire (3 wire alternator)
Fully charged battery and connections are good. P.O. had the connectors shimmed so I replaced them. It's a 92 mpi. 3.1. My battery to block ground is good checked it with the multimeter and the block to firewall is also good. Through my reading if I'm not misinformed the purple wire that's hooked to the coolant sensor should actually be plugged to the 02 sensor on my y pipe but as the P.O. decided to cut my pig tail off to the O2 sensor I have no idea what all is crossed down there and am having a hell of a time finding a good diagram for a 92 3.1

http://repairguide.autozone.com/znet...528009918a.gif ... this is for a 91, you can ask around and see if they are the same

Re: 54v at brown sensing/exciter wire (3 wire alternator)
Thanks everyone for your help I bypassed the sense wire with a 12v constant and an inline fuse and I'm reading 14.5v strong at the gauge. Turned on all accessories and tried a hard stop still didn't dip below 13.5v and the gauge didn't move until the stop. After I let off the brakes she bounced right back up. I still haven't solved this problem but I've at least found a temporary fix.
